IELTS Writing Task 2 question
In many countries not enough students are choosing to study science at university. What are the causes of this? What effects does it have on society?
Give reasons for your answer and include relevant examples from your knowledge or experience.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
In many regions, science is choosen by less learners at universities. While this happens because of the complexity of science , this presents several issues like shortage of science graduates for some vital sectors. .This essay will discuss about the primary reasons and illustrate the key disadvantages in society.
Nowadays, less students are willing to study science subjects because of the complexity of science majors. This is largely because almost every science major includes complex mathmetics like calculas, differentiation, intregation, algebra. For instance, students at Zurich university of Applied Sciences have to spend 40 hours studying and solving complex maths and physics every week which is causing them burnout. Another reason is the job market of science sectors. Students who do not maintain heigher CGPA cannot get a job after graduation after studying and trying for years. Consequently, students are loosing their interest in science field and they are choosing BBA more than science background majors.
This is leading to severe shortage of science field graduates in society. Many countries have to hier engineers and doctors from other region to fulfill their shortage. For instance, europe is in massive shortage of Electronics and Electrical Engineers and they have to hire around 30 thousands of graduates every year from other countries to fullfill their demand. Another drawback is that companies cannot produce enough goods in shortage of engineers. Another example can be seen in medical sectors where native citizens cannot get proper healthcare in time because of the shortage of doctors which leads to a poor life quality in Europe.
In conclusion, students are avoiding science because of the intense studyload and insecurity of jobs which is leading to shortage of talents in society.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
You address both parts of the question and maintain a clear focus on causes and social effects. The causes—demanding mathematics and uncertainty about employment—are relevant, and the examples of engineering and healthcare shortages show how reduced enrolment could affect society. The response also gives a clear overall position in the introduction and conclusion. However, some ideas are more fully explained than others: the claim that students with a lower CGPA cannot find work is asserted without explaining why this is typical, and the effects on production and healthcare are mentioned briefly rather than developed. To strengthen the response, explain the links between fewer science students, workforce shortages, and wider consequences in more detail, while qualifying broad claims about regions or countries.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The essay has a coherent overall arrangement: an introduction, a paragraph on causes, one on effects, and a conclusion. The progression from difficult studies and job prospects to shortages in engineering and medicine is generally easy to follow. You also use signposting such as “Another reason,” “Consequently,” and “In conclusion” to guide the reader. At times, however, the linking feels mechanical, and some connections between claims need clearer explanation. For example, the move from students’ CGPA to choosing BBA would benefit from a more explicit link, while the production and healthcare effects could be grouped and developed more smoothly. Review punctuation around sentence boundaries, particularly the extra full stop in the introduction, and use referencing carefully so each example clearly supports its point.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use relevant topic vocabulary, including “science majors,” “science graduates,” “shortage,” “engineers,” and “healthcare,” and you attempt more specific terms such as “differentiation” and “integration.” This gives you enough vocabulary to communicate the main ideas, but noticeable spelling and word-choice errors reduce precision and sometimes make the reader pause. Examples include “choosen,” “mathmetics,” “loosing,” and “fullfill.” Some phrases are also unnatural or imprecise, such as “science field graduates,” “massive shortage,” and “poor life quality.” Aim to learn accurate spelling alongside natural collocations, and choose formal, precise expressions. This would make your argument clearer and show more flexible control of vocabulary.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, including a subordinate clause in “because of the complexity of science” and a relative clause in “which leads to a poor life quality.” Most of the meaning remains understandable, but some grammatical errors and punctuation problems are evident. For example, “less students are willing” has a determiner-agreement issue, and “which is causing them burnout” does not fit smoothly with the preceding sentence structure. The opening also contains an extra full stop and inconsistent spacing around punctuation. Work on accurate sentence boundaries, agreement, and clause construction, especially when combining cause and result. More consistently controlled complex sentences would improve clarity while preserving the range you already attempt.
