IELTS Writing Task 2 question

In many countries not enough students are choosing to study science at university. What are the causes of this? What effects does it have on society?

Give reasons for your answer and include relevant examples from your knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 5.0)

Many students from different countries are not tend to select science as their major at university because learners may find science related departments more difficult than any other majors. In my perception,i do not assume this statement to have any negative effects on our society. This essay will elaborate the perspective with relevant examples further.

Admittedly, science majors are more focused in mathematical courses and practcal exemptions of science such as biology, chemistry, highermath, physics and applied science.Furthermore, these subjects are tend to generate higher career opportunities. For instance, doctors, engineers and architectures. For development purpose of a particular country these professionals are imperative.Nevertheless, these professions comes with a tougher price of hardships.Majority of students are less likely to comprehend the difficulties of these courses. Moreover, these subjects requires a strong foundational knowledge about mathematics which can not be always easier approach for students.

From my perspective,I believe that students are less likely to take pressure for their academic lives. For example, if a student is persuing their career as a doctor they are tend to comprehend mathematical terms easily, but there are many students out there who wants to carry out their academic life easily and with better grades. As a consequence, they choose easy majors at their universities to maintain a good CGPA which will be much harder to get if they select science as their major subjects at their university.A good CGPA matters a lot for a university-goer to have a better career ahead if they want to study abroad or get a better job opportunity.Reasonably, students become concerned regarding their better performance at university which will lead them to better grades for their future academic welfare rather than focusing on science related subjects which may cause their grades to fall if they put less attention to their studies.

In conclusion,I firmly believe that students are more likely to be concerned about their grades when they are choosing other majors over science at their academic lives.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.5

You identify a plausible cause: students may avoid science because its courses are demanding and require strong mathematical foundations. You also explain that some prefer other majors to protect their grades and future prospects. However, the task asks for the effects of low science enrolment on society, and this part is largely missing. The statement that you do not expect negative effects is not supported with a clear explanation, and the discussion instead focuses on students’ individual choices. The brief reference to doctors and engineers suggests their importance, but does not explain what society might experience if too few people enter these fields. Address both causes and social consequences directly, with developed examples, to make the response more complete.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0

The response has a recognisable introduction, two body paragraphs and a conclusion, and the ideas generally move from course difficulty to students’ concern about grades. Connectors such as “Furthermore,” “Nevertheless” and “As a consequence” help signal relationships. However, the overall progression is weakened because the essay does not clearly separate causes from effects on society; the second body paragraph continues discussing students’ choices rather than developing the social effects required by the task. Some links are also mechanical or unclear, and the conclusion mainly repeats the point about grades. Use topic sentences that identify each part of the question, then ensure each paragraph develops that focus with clear references and transitions.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use some relevant topic vocabulary, including “foundational knowledge,” “career opportunities,” “professionals” and “academic lives,” and this gives you a basis for discussing education and work. There is also an attempt to use more formal expressions. However, word choice and collocation are often inaccurate or unnatural, as in “practical exemptions,” “tougher price of hardships,” “carry out their academic life” and “academic welfare.” These phrases can make the intended meaning difficult to follow. Some wording is also repetitive, particularly references to grades, majors and students. Aim for precise, natural combinations such as “practical applications,” “demanding courses” and “pursue a degree,” and use vocabulary that directly describes societal consequences.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

You attempt both simple and longer sentences, including conditional and subordinate structures, for example, “if a student is persuing their career as a doctor…” and the sentence beginning “Reasonably, students become concerned…”. However, complex sentences are often difficult to control, and errors occur frequently enough to affect clarity. Examples include “students … are not tend to select,” “these subjects are tend to generate,” “these professions comes,” and “these subjects requires,” where verb forms or subject–verb agreement are incorrect. Sentence boundaries and punctuation also need attention: several sentences run directly into the next without a space after the full stop or comma. Practise accurate verb patterns and agreement, and divide long sentences into clearer units.
