IELTS Writing Task 2 question
In many countries not enough students are choosing to study science at university. What are the causes of this? What effects does it have on society?
Give reasons for your answer and include relevant examples from your knowledge or experience.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
In various nations, there is a decreasing trend for studying science at a university. As the world is moving towards the technical innovations and practical skills, decremental generation of scientists can have the effects such as less theories can be discovered and negative influence on the development of the world.
Nowadays, there is a rapid increase in the proportion of younger generations in the technical field because technical jobs are easily accessible in the job markets including of jobs in industries, automobile sectors and energy fields.People who graduated with technical skills and knowledge, can secure a highly compensating job. However, graduates of science have a limited job opportunity, for instance, a physicist is mostly employed in a university. Another cause of this growing trend is science entirely focusing on pure theoretical knowledge rather than practical vocational skills. Consequently, a student is williing to study technical subject which provides skills, knowledge and higher pay-check.
There are primarily two effects which might happen to the society if students do not study science at university. First one is that there will be little ideas and thories generation day by day. Because technical field such as engineering is promoted and backed up by the thories and experimentation that is proven by the scientists. For example, Newton's third law is directly applied in rockets, ships, and any moving body. Another effect will be noticed when the development of modern society is decreased. While the innovaters and engineers research and develop several instruments, there is deep-rooted dependancy on the equations and formulas provided by the scientists.
In conclusion, the causes for the decreasing trend of choosing science at a university are increasing preference for technical subjects and practical skills. As as result of this, there might be less proven theories. Consequently, growing generations might be left behind and pace of development of human race might be saturated.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
You address both parts of the question and maintain a clear line of argument: students are drawn to technical subjects because these seem to offer more practical skills and better-paid employment, while fewer science graduates may slow theoretical discovery and wider development. The examples of physicists’ employment and Newton’s law help make the points relevant. This meets the task well, but some ideas are less fully explained than others. In particular, the claim that science focuses on theory could be clarified with a specific example of how university courses or career pathways discourage students. The societal effects also overlap somewhat; explain more distinctly how reduced scientific research affects areas such as medicine, energy, or technology to develop the response further.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The response has a clear overall structure: an introduction, a paragraph on causes, one on effects, and a conclusion. The progression from employment incentives to the consequences of fewer scientists is easy to follow, and signposts such as “Another cause” and “First” help guide the reader. However, some linking is mechanical, particularly the repeated use of “Another” and “Consequently,” and a few connections between claims need clearer explanation. For example, the transition from technical jobs being accessible to science graduates having limited opportunities could be made more explicit. The sentence beginning “Because technical field…” is a fragment, which interrupts the flow. More varied, precise referencing and smoother links between examples and claims would strengthen cohesion.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You attempt topic-specific vocabulary, including “technical innovations,” “vocational skills,” “experimentation,” and “development,” which helps communicate the subject. There is also some effort to use less common terms. However, inaccurate word choice, collocation, and spelling are noticeable and sometimes make the meaning less natural: “decremental generation,” “highly compensating job,” “theories generation,” and “deep-rooted dependancy” are examples. Several ideas also rely on repeated general words such as “technical,” “development,” and “skills.” Aim for more conventional academic combinations and check spelling and word forms. Greater precision in describing scientific careers and social consequences would make the vocabulary more effective and flexible.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
You use both simple sentences and attempts at complex structures, including clauses introduced by “because,” “while,” and “which.” The overall meaning is generally understandable, but some grammatical errors recur and occasionally make sentences awkward. For example, “a student is williing to study” has an incorrect verb construction, while “Because technical field such as engineering is promoted…” is an incomplete sentence and lacks an article before “technical field.” There are also problems with agreement and sentence construction in “less theories can be discovered” and “the development of modern society is decreased.” Review articles, plural forms, and complete clause structure, and proofread punctuation. More consistently accurate complex sentences would improve control.
