Student answer (Band 6.0)

Science has always played a crucial role in building an individual's core skills like critical thinking and logical reasoning which made humans innovative. However, in the modern era the trend among students to pursue their careers in science is significantly declinning. This sharp shift from science can have detrimental effects on economy of a particular country. This essay will discuss both the causes and effects of it on the society.

The young generation is more prone to withdraw their interests from science subjects because there are some over-rated professions considered as the only available options to pursue careers with.As a result, students dream of either becoming a pilot, doctor or an engineer. For instance, when i had to choose my profession i was unaware of the some science fields such as the biotechnology, bioinformatics and like the realm i dreamed of being a pilot, ending up in aviation management.Additonally, the decline in taking science as their majors among students may be due to insufficient career counselling in the educational institutes.Consequently, students are forced to choose their professions from the limited options available for them.

On the other hand, situation will be worst if the science modules fail to attract students because it can lead to a severe shortage of the skilled workforce and talented individuals in the country.Consequently, this shortage of desired skill-set will increase unemployment as many organizations will start recruit international employees even at higher costs. However, this increased international recruitment will enhance other economical issues such as high taxes, inflation rate.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5

You address both parts of the question and maintain a relevant focus on why students avoid science and what this may mean for society. The examples of limited career awareness and insufficient counselling are pertinent, and your personal example helps illustrate the first cause. However, the effects are less fully developed: you mention a skills shortage, international recruitment, and possible economic pressures, but the links between these outcomes need clearer explanation and support. The claim that overseas recruitment will increase taxes and inflation is particularly broad and would benefit from a specific explanation or example. The response is also four words below the required minimum, so it does not meet the task’s length requirement. Develop the effects more fully and ensure the response reaches the required length.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The response has a clear overall structure: an introduction, a paragraph on causes, and a paragraph on effects. Ideas generally progress in a sensible order, and linking expressions such as “As a result,” “For instance,” and “Additionally” help show relationships. However, some connections feel mechanical or unclear. For example, “On the other hand” suggests a contrast, although the paragraph introduces the effects rather than an opposing view. The chain from a shortage of skilled workers to unemployment and then to higher taxes and inflation also needs clearer logical links. The conclusion is absent, leaving the discussion without a final summary. Use transitions that accurately signal the relationship between ideas, and add a brief concluding paragraph.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use an adequate range of vocabulary for the topic, including “critical thinking,” “career counselling,” “skilled workforce,” and “international employees.” These choices help communicate the main points, and some less common expressions show an effort to be precise. However, several word choices or collocations are inaccurate or awkward, such as “withdraw their interests from science,” “over-rated professions,” and “desired skill-set.” There are also spelling errors, including “declinning” and “Additonally,” which reduce accuracy. Aim for more natural academic phrasing and check spelling carefully. For example, describe students as “losing interest in science” and refer to “a shortage of skilled workers” rather than relying on less natural combinations.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, including clauses introduced by “because,” “when,” and “as.” Most of the meaning remains clear, and the longer sentences show an attempt to explain causes and consequences. Some grammatical errors and punctuation problems remain, however. In “which made humans innovative,” the tense and reference are not well controlled; “the trend … is significantly declining” also has an awkward verb construction. Articles and sentence boundaries need attention, as in “unaware of the some science fields” and the run-together “innovative.However.” Capitalisation is inconsistent, including “i.” Review article use, verb forms, and punctuation, and separate sentences with appropriate spacing.
