IELTS Writing Task 2 question
In many countries not enough students are choosing to study science at university. What are the causes of this? What effects does it have on society?
Give reasons for your answer and include relevant examples from your knowledge or experience.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
There has been a growing trend of lesser students choosing to study science at universities. This is evident in many countries around the world. This essay will shed light on the main causes and the effects it has on society.
One of the major reasons is the increasing unemployment in people opting STEM courses. There are not many jobs available for people from science background which makes this field less attractive for students. The decreasing wages in engineering and medical sectors has further prompted students to choose other courses such as commerce, arts and humanities.
Emergence of the digital age has led to the creation of various new-age jobs and sectors. Students are exploring careers in the field of graphic designing, fashion technology and digital marketing which offers them a chance to use their creative potential
Reduction in number of science graduates can lead to various problems in the society. It might lead to a shortage of skilled workforce in the future. Less number of doctors and nurses may adversely effect the already broken medical system. The rate of scientific and technological advancements will be hampered due to lesser number of people in these fields. This will have a major impact on a country's economic output.
In conclusion, creation of jobs in new sectors and unemployment among science graduates has led to fewer students choosing to study science at university. This can heavily impact the medical sector in the future and lead to fewer people in this sector.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5
You address both parts of the question and maintain a relevant focus on why students avoid science and what society may lose as a result. The causes include perceived unemployment and competition from newer career fields, while the effects include shortages of healthcare workers, slower technological progress and reduced economic output. However, these points are asserted rather than sufficiently explained or supported with a specific example. The claim that science graduates face increasing unemployment and falling wages, for instance, needs clarification or evidence, and the effects paragraph could explain more fully how fewer graduates would affect society. The conclusion also repeats the medical-sector effect rather than drawing together the wider consequences. The response is three words below the required minimum, so it does not meet the task’s length requirement.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The response has a clear overall structure: an introduction, a paragraph on causes, one on effects, and a conclusion. This makes the main line of argument easy to follow. The progression from employment concerns to alternative careers is generally logical, and the effects are grouped together appropriately. However, the causes paragraph contains two separate ideas without a clear linking sentence, and the second cause paragraph ends abruptly without punctuation. Some connections are also mechanical or unclear: “This is evident” refers broadly to the trend, while “This” in the conclusion could refer to several preceding ideas. Use clearer transitions between causes and explain how each point connects to the next; ensure paragraph endings are complete.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use a relevant range of topic vocabulary, including “unemployment,” “STEM courses,” “digital age,” “skilled workforce,” and “technological advancements.” These choices help communicate the subject and show some willingness to use less common terms. However, several expressions are imprecise or unnatural, such as “lesser students,” “increasing unemployment in people opting STEM courses,” and “broken medical system.” “New-age jobs” and “creative potential” are understandable but broad, and the response repeats “students,” “science,” and “sector” frequently. Aim for more precise collocations and avoid claims that sound overly sweeping. For example, distinguish between limited job prospects in particular fields and unemployment among science graduates generally.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, including the relative clause in “jobs … which offers them a chance” and the conditional structure “It might lead to a shortage.” Most sentences communicate their meaning, and errors do not generally prevent understanding. Some grammatical inaccuracies remain, however. In “jobs … which offers,” the verb should agree with the plural noun “jobs”; “people opting STEM courses” needs a grammatical construction such as “people opting for STEM courses”; and “Less number of doctors” is not a well-formed comparative phrase. There are also missing spaces after full stops in “system. The” and “fields. This,” and the sentence about creative careers lacks final punctuation. Check agreement, articles and sentence boundaries during proofreading.
