IELTS Writing Task 2 question

In many countries not enough students are choosing to study science at university. What are the causes of this? What effects does it have on society?

Give reasons for your answer and include relevant examples from your knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

There is an ongoing debate about students from various countries are not inclined toward studying science at university. The main causes of this issue is the job demands in business and IT fields, and society witnesses a negative impacts such as out-dated science discoveries.

There are numerous reasons why students choose to study subjects such as business and information technology (IT), but the main reason is these jobs are demanding in this competetive jobs' market. Moreover, professions in business and IT achieve well-paid jobs and financial security after graduated. In addition, they have a flexible work arrangments and achieve work-life balance. For example, individuals who are working in IT related jobs like cycber security, or graphic designing, they often have flexible time and

can take family responsibilities.

One of the disadvantages is scientists will be uncapable to conduct up-to-date science discoveries because of insufficient experienced scientist. If scientists are not able to conduct science discoveries, it would be less possible to improve the people health and standards of living. Moreover, the aim of the scientists is to discover more about the innovative things and

test it with scientific methods then publise to boarden the people knowledge or to cure the chronic diseases such as diabetes and cancer. For instance, during the pendamic, many scientists attempted to produce the inject, which can cure the side effects of Covid -19 and they successfully manufacture it. For this reason, the government should encourage university students to take the science subject because it can positively impact on the society by discovering new medical methods.

To conclude, I do believe that many university students take business and IT subjects because of higher salaries and flexible work arrangements. As a result, scientists are not able to conduct up-to-date discoveries, which can be beneficial for our society.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

You address both parts of the question: you suggest that business and IT attract students through pay, job demand and flexible arrangements, then explain that fewer science students may limit research and medical progress. The Covid example helps make the societal effect relevant. However, the causes are developed more clearly than the effects: the claim that discoveries will become “out-dated” is not fully explained, and the discussion of scientists’ aims and the pandemic vaccine is somewhat unclear. The final recommendation that governments encourage science study is relevant, but it could be linked more directly to the causes you identified. Develop each main effect with a clear chain of explanation and a precise example.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The response has a clear overall structure, with an introduction, separate paragraphs for causes and effects, and a conclusion that restates the main points. Linking expressions such as “Moreover,” “In addition,” and “For instance” help signal relationships between ideas. However, some connections are mechanical or unclear. For example, “If scientists are not able to conduct science discoveries” repeats the previous point rather than advancing it, and the shift from the pandemic example to the recommendation is abrupt. The introduction also combines the causes and effects in a sentence that is difficult to follow. Use clearer topic sentences and make each sentence build on the previous one; ensure pronouns and references identify their subject precisely.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use relevant topic vocabulary, including “financial security,” “work-life balance,” “scientific methods,” and “chronic diseases,” and you attempt some less common expressions. However, inaccurate word choice, collocation and spelling are noticeable and sometimes make ideas less clear. Examples include “out-dated science discoveries,” “achieve well-paid jobs,” “un capable,” and “publise to boarden the people knowledge.” Several forms are also misspelled, such as “competetive,” “arrangments,” and “pendamic.” Aim for natural academic collocations and check spelling carefully. More precise terms for research outcomes and employment benefits would help you express the argument with greater clarity and flexibility.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt both simple and complex sentence forms, including conditional structures such as “If scientists are not able to…,” and most of the argument remains understandable. Some grammatical errors nevertheless affect clarity. For example, “The main causes … is” has a subject–verb agreement problem, while “after graduated” needs a different verb construction. There are also issues with articles, plurals and sentence boundaries, as in “a negative impacts” and “living.Moreover.” The long sentence beginning “Moreover, the aim of the scientists…” is difficult to control and contains several linked clauses. Practise checking agreement, verb forms and punctuation, and divide long sentences where needed while retaining a mix of sentence structures.
