IELTS Writing Task 2 question
In many countries not enough students are choosing to study science at university. What are the causes of this? What effects does it have on society?
Give reasons for your answer and include relevant examples from your knowledge or experience.
Student answer (Band 6.5)
Nowadays, there are numerous career options available to students, and many students prefer not to learn science in college. This essay will discuss the main reasons why students are not selecting science at university and the effects of this trend on society.
One of the main reasons that students are not choosing science is that there is a lot of competition in this area and job opportunities are limited. Over the years, not enough jobs are created in the science sector, resulting in high competiton for jobs in this sector. In addition, wide range of courses are also emerging with high job opportunities. As a result, students tend to incline more towards those areas. For instance, in India banking sector is flourishing over the past few years, and it has employed more students than science. Thus, students are prefering to study commerce due to more chances of securing a job.
Moving forward, this trend will have drastic effect on the technological advancement. As students are shifting their preference, limited research and development will take place in science technology. In addition, most of the countries will suffer from theacute shortage of skilled doctors and engineers. These professions are the backbone of countrie's development. For example, without competent engineers, our infrastructure will lack behind. And without proficient doctors, cure of fatal diseases including Corona virus will not be possible.
In conclusion, although job opportunities in various sectors are increasing and providing livelihoods to many people, career options in science should also increase rapidly. Otherwise, there could be serious consequence for our technology, infrastructure and health care.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
You address both parts of the question and maintain a clear focus on why students avoid science and what this may mean for society. The explanation that limited science-sector jobs and competition push students towards courses with stronger employment prospects is relevant, and the India banking example helps illustrate this cause. You also identify plausible effects on research, engineering, infrastructure and healthcare. However, the causes are developed more fully than the effects: the claims about shortages of doctors and engineers and the consequences for disease treatment would benefit from clearer explanation and more precise support. The response therefore covers the task, while some ideas remain general or less fully developed. To strengthen it further, explain the links between fewer science graduates and each societal consequence in more detail.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0
The response has a clear overall structure: an introduction, separate paragraphs for causes and effects, and a conclusion. Ideas generally progress logically, and signposting such as “One of the main reasons,” “As a result,” and “In addition” helps readers follow the argument. The examples are placed alongside the points they support. Some linking is a little mechanical, however, and the effects paragraph moves quickly from research to shortages of professionals and then to infrastructure and disease treatment. The conclusion also introduces a recommendation to increase science career opportunities, which is not fully developed in the preceding discussion. For stronger progression, connect each effect explicitly to the decline in student numbers and make the conclusion summarise the argument rather than add a new proposal.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
You use an adequate range of topic vocabulary, including “competition,” “job opportunities,” “research and development,” “technological advancement,” and “infrastructure.” These choices make the main ideas clear, and there are attempts at more formal phrasing such as “the backbone of” a country’s development. Some word choices and collocations are inaccurate or imprecise, including “students tend to incline more towards,” “limited research and development will take place in science technology,” and “our infrastructure will lack behind.” Spelling errors such as “competiton” and “prefering” also reduce accuracy. Aim for more natural academic collocations and check spelling carefully; for example, use “are more inclined towards,” “scientific research and development,” and “infrastructure will fall behind.”
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, including cause-and-effect structures with “resulting in” and “As a result,” as well as a conditional sentence beginning “without competent engineers.” Most sentences communicate the intended meaning, but some grammatical errors remain. Examples include “In addition, wide range of courses” (missing an article), “students are prefering” (incorrect verb form), and “most of the countries will suffer from theacute shortage” (article and spacing problems). The phrase “career options in science should also increase rapidly” also has an unclear grammatical relationship between options and increase. Review articles, verb forms, and sentence construction, and proofread punctuation and spacing. More consistently accurate complex sentences would improve control while preserving your current range.
