In many countries not enough students are choosing to study science at university. What are the causes of this? What effects does it have on society?

Give reasons for your answer and include relevant examples from your knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 5.0)

In many countries, fewer students are choosing science-related subjects at university. This trend may be caused by the difficulty of scientific disciplines and concerns about career opportunities, and it could have negative consequences for society.

Though science is accessible to study in most of the countries still some of countries out there its not easy . As Science is difficult students may prefer degrees they believe offer better job prospects and more easier to study. To study science cost, materials , ability to gain knowledge matters . but not everyone cant afford that. students such in poor country like Africa or Asia like Bangladesh has no knowledge about science because they are more curious about their job market which are mostly rather than science.

As shortage of scientists could slow technological development and medical research so will be happen economic fall. Without study science and specific job market no one can guarantee the stability in society. Even this can lead to both crisis economic and young generation .

Though the effects mostly are negative on society . I believe that it without study science a country cant be developed . All depends on future generation who are passionate about science and make something good out of that and make sure to do better for country .

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0

You address both causes and effects, and your opening identifies difficulty and career concerns as reasons students avoid science. You also mention possible effects, including slower technological development, reduced medical research and economic decline. However, these points are only briefly stated and are not supported with clear, specific examples. The discussion of access and affordability is difficult to follow, and the claim that students in parts of Africa or Asia lack knowledge about science is broad and unexplained. Your position that science is important to national development is present, but it is not consistently developed. The response is 34 words below the required minimum, which limits the space available to explain and support the ideas. Develop each cause and effect with a clear explanation and a relevant example.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5

The response has a basic overall structure: an introduction, a paragraph about causes, a paragraph about effects, and a concluding view. This helps the reader identify the main stages of your answer. However, progression within paragraphs is often unclear. For example, the causes paragraph moves from access to difficulty, cost, and job prospects without showing how these points connect. The effects paragraph combines technological progress, medical research, economic decline, and social stability in a few loosely linked statements. Some linking expressions, such as “Though” and “Even this,” do not clearly express the relationship between ideas. Use topic sentences and organise each paragraph around one main point, then explain it before moving to the next.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

You use some relevant topic vocabulary, including “scientific disciplines,” “career opportunities,” “technological development,” and “medical research.” These terms help communicate the subject of the essay. However, the range is limited, and several word choices or combinations are inaccurate or unclear, sometimes making the meaning difficult to understand. For instance, “economic fall,” “specific job market,” and “more easier to study” do not express your intended ideas naturally. There are also inconsistent capitalisation and spacing, such as “Science” in the middle of a sentence and spaces before punctuation. Build a more precise set of phrases for discussing university choices, employment prospects, and social consequences, and check that each phrase fits its context.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

You attempt both simple and more complex sentence forms, including the opening sentence with “and” and the clause beginning “As shortage of scientists.” However, complex structures are often faulty, and frequent errors can make the reader work to understand your meaning. Examples include “Though science is accessible to study … still,” “its not easy,” and “students … has no knowledge,” where clause structure, verb agreement, or sentence boundaries are not controlled. The sentence “Without study science and specific job market no one can guarantee the stability in society” also lacks a clear grammatical structure. Focus first on accurate simple sentences, then practise joining them with correctly formed subordinate clauses. Check subject–verb agreement, articles, and punctuation when editing.
