IELTS Writing Task 2 question

In many countries not enough students are choosing to study science at university. What are the causes of this? What effects does it have on society?

Give reasons for your answer and include relevant examples from your knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

Most students are focusing on art and social subjects rather then science in several countries. The reason is lack of jobs in such departments which will probably effect the availability of basic facilities in a country like medical and reaserch centers. This essay will furthur discuss the various causes and effects of it.

There are numerous reasons behind this decreasing trend in a country. Firstly students have seen graduated in sciences are jobless in their countries. For example in India more than 25% decline in sciences admission has been noticed in previous year. Main reason was lack of oppertunities in hospitals as a doctor job as well as shortage of scientific lab and research departments for future job. Secondly, lack of basic facilities in colleges and universities. If students are not provided with proper labs are equipments in universities, it will result in lack of students intrest in such areas. Such as in many univerties graduates have to buy chemicals with their own money as postgraduates institutes are unable to provide them. Hence, this cost on students pockets which is totally unfair and unethical towards students.

This will be effecting a particular society in many ways. Such as lack of doctors in hospitals and reaserchers in scientific labortries. For example, Uk has a drastic lack of nurses and doctors in hospitals and they are inviting professional doctors from other counteries. Although, this is helpful for short time but long-term effects of it would be hard to mannage by the governments. Another example is from Iran, due to lack of scientist they have to seek help from other sharp minded people from the world during war. If students loose their intrest in such a rapid rate it will also make a worry for country economey and prosperity.

In conclusion, I would suggest governments to take measure against this decreasing trend in order to save your's country medical departments and many other science related institutes by creating more job oppertunities and facilities in universities.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

You address both parts of the question: you identify causes, including limited employment prospects and inadequate university facilities, and discuss effects such as shortages of medical staff and researchers. The examples from India, the UK and Iran help make the response relevant, and your conclusion proposes government action. However, some claims are not fully explained or clearly connected to the question. For instance, the example about Iran seeking help during war is difficult to interpret, while the link between science graduates’ job prospects and students’ choices could be developed more precisely. The opening also refers to students choosing arts and social subjects, but the essay could explain more directly why those fields seem more attractive. More specific explanation of each cause and its wider social consequences would strengthen the response.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The response has a clear overall structure, with an introduction, separate paragraphs for causes and effects, and a concluding recommendation. Sequencing words such as “Firstly,” “Secondly,” and “In conclusion” make the main stages easy to follow. This gives the essay a coherent progression, although some connections are mechanical or unclear. For example, “This will be effecting a particular society in many ways” does not clearly refer back to the causes, and the transition from the UK’s staff shortages to the Iran example is abrupt. Some sentences also begin with fragments such as “Such as lack of doctors,” which interrupts the flow. Use clearer links between each example and the point it supports, and vary transitions so that relationships between ideas—not just their order—are explicit.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use relevant topic vocabulary, including “job opportunities,” “research departments,” “facilities,” and “prosperity,” and you attempt more specific terms such as “scientific laboratories.” This gives you enough vocabulary to communicate the main ideas, but inaccurate word forms, spelling and collocations are noticeable and sometimes make the reader pause. Examples include “reaserch,” “oppertunities,” “intrest,” and “mannage”; these errors recur across the response. Some phrases are also imprecise, such as “sharp minded people” and “a doctor job,” and “effect” is used where the verb “affect” is needed. Build accuracy by checking spelling and choosing natural academic collocations, while retaining the relevant subject vocabulary you already use.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt both simple and complex structures, including conditional sentences (“If students are not provided with proper labs…”) and a concession (“Although, this is helpful for short time…”). These attempts show some range, but errors in sentence construction and verb forms remain noticeable. For example, “students have seen graduated in sciences are jobless” is not a well-formed clause, and “This will be effecting a particular society” uses an unsuitable verb form. There are also problems with articles and agreement, as in “for short time” and “this cost on students pockets.” Some sentence fragments, including “Such as lack of doctors,” affect grammatical completeness. Practise building complete clauses and checking verb forms, articles and possessives; more accurate control of these patterns would make your ideas easier to follow.
