IELTS Writing Task 2 question

In many countries not enough students are choosing to study science at university. What are the causes of this? What effects does it have on society?

Give reasons for your answer and include relevant examples from your knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 5.5)

Yes this is true studends in many countries are not choosing science courses for their study at university. There can may be a lot of reasons for that but in my opinion their is a major reason behind it which is those courses are much expenses than other courses.Which leads students to choose low fee courses of the university.

As we know the study of science is expencive alot of students are not rich and they had to pay their feeses by themselves they work partime and do other things for that ,So they concider low payable programs. There are very few scholorships for those students and also science study is quite hard most of the studends cannot pay heed to there studies and some of them which are working to pay their feeses cannot give a proper time for their studies so there is a huge amount of chances they would get failed in their exams. The average students who achive like 60% to 70% marks they cannot prepare well for there exams as the science study is difficult for them.

Moreover in my opinion it had a very bad effect on the socity,as we know that our most of the future is depend on science if we want to learn about anything we just need to open services which are given by science. Our almost every technology depends on science like Chatgpt, now cars even can fly, high speed technology and information about space almost all our knowledge need science,So if we did not have enough studends those are studing sciences it will have a very dangerous effect on society.

I think government should have to take notice on this huge topic of studies

Like i gave the example of the expences of studing science.Government should need to give science education free or they simply reduce the expences of studing science

Thank You

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5

You address both parts of the question and give a clear main cause: the cost of science courses, especially for students who must support themselves. You also identify a possible social effect, arguing that fewer science students could weaken technological development. However, the response develops these points only partially. The discussion of difficulty and students’ work commitments overlaps with the cost argument, while the effects section mainly lists examples such as cars, ChatGPT and space knowledge without explaining specific consequences, such as shortages of scientists or slower medical innovation. The final recommendation about government support is relevant, but it does not replace fuller explanation and examples. Develop each cause and effect through a clear explanation of how it influences students or society.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5

The response has a recognisable overall structure: an introduction, a paragraph about causes, a paragraph about effects, and a concluding recommendation. This helps the reader follow the broad direction of your answer. However, progression within paragraphs is uneven, and several ideas are joined in long, crowded sentences. For example, the causes paragraph moves from fees to scholarships, difficulty, work, and exam results without clearly separating or prioritising these points. Linking expressions such as “Moreover,” “as we know,” and “So” are used, but some connections feel repetitive or do not show the precise relationship between ideas. Use topic sentences and divide related points into shorter units; then use referencing and linking words to make cause-and-effect relationships explicit.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

You use some vocabulary relevant to the topic, including “scholarships,” “technology,” “science education,” and “society,” and the reader can generally identify your intended meaning. However, the range is limited and several word choices or collocations are inaccurate or repetitive, which sometimes makes the message less clear. Phrases such as “low payable programs,” “pay heed to there studies,” and “a very dangerous effect” are not natural or precise in this context. Spelling errors, including “expencive,” “studends,” and “socity,” are also noticeable. Build a more accurate set of topic-specific expressions and check spelling carefully. For instance, explain that high tuition and living costs may discourage applicants, and specify the social consequences rather than relying on broad phrases such as “bad effect.”

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

You attempt both simple and more extended sentence forms, including clauses explaining why students work and how this affects their studies. However, complex sentences are often difficult to control, and frequent errors in sentence structure, verb forms, agreement, articles, and punctuation can make the reader pause. Examples include “There can may be,” “their is a major reason,” “our most of the future is depend on science,” and “Government should have to take notice.” Several sentences also run together, particularly the long explanation beginning “As we know the study of science is expencive.” Practise building accurate sentences around one main idea, then add subordinate clauses only when you can control them. Check subject–verb agreement, verb forms, and sentence boundaries during revision.
