IELTS Writing Task 2 question

In many countries not enough students are choosing to study science at university. What are the causes of this? What effects does it have on society?

Give reasons for your answer and include relevant examples from your knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

In many countries not enough undergraduates are selecting to study science at higher institution.

Overall, many students choose to study other courses rather than science because they tend to find science subjects very difficult, on the other hand, this will bring the scarcity of science professionals to the society.

Furthermore, other courses such as arts and educations are more easier for many students to understand than science subjects like maths, physics and chemistry. For instance, in my ss2 class, about 98 students choosed science but about 12 of us dropped out before we took our WAEC in ss3. Passion is another reason, some students have zeals in other courses, some want to be a banker, an artist, or journalist so they tends to choose a course that allign with their dream.

However, if this trends countinue, there will be shortage of scienties like engineers and medical doctors in the society. For example, countries like Germany, Austrelia and Nigeria are all experiencing the shortage of engineers today. Moreover, parents, teachers and government should encourage undergraduates, mentore them and enlight them the benefits of studying science in the university. For instance, my father sat me down and advised me the benefits of selecting civil enginnering when i was about to enter university in 2016 and that advise was the best thing that happened to me today.

In conclusion, students should stop seeing science courses as a difficult subjects but rather embrace it, in contrast, government and parents should encourage the student and enlight them the benefits of science education in the society.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

You address both parts of the question: you explain that students may avoid science because they find it difficult or have different career interests, and you describe a possible social effect through shortages of engineers and doctors. The personal examples from your school experience and your father’s advice make the response relevant. This meets the task well overall, but the effects are less fully developed than the causes: the discussion focuses mainly on shortages of professionals and could explain more specifically how these affect services, innovation, or the economy. The claim that several named countries are experiencing shortages would also be stronger with a clearer explanation or supporting detail. Developing these points would make the response more complete and persuasive.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The response has a recognisable overall structure, moving from an introduction to causes, effects, and a conclusion. Paragraphing helps distinguish the main stages of the answer, and examples generally follow the points they support. However, progression within paragraphs is sometimes uneven: the sentence beginning “Moreover, parents, teachers and government…” shifts from effects to recommendations, which are not directly required by the question. Some linking is mechanical or unclear, particularly “on the other hand” where the relationship is cause and result, and “in contrast” in the conclusion. Use more precise links and keep each paragraph focused on one function. Clearer referencing and transitions would make the organisation smoother.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use relevant topic vocabulary, including “science subjects,” “scarcity,” “engineers,” and “medical doctors,” and you attempt less common expressions such as “benefits of studying science.” This gives you enough language to communicate the main ideas. However, inaccurate word choice, word forms, and spelling are noticeable and sometimes make the reader pause: “scienties” for “scientists,” “zeals” for “enthusiasm,” and “allign” for “align” are examples. Some phrases are also unnatural, such as “higher institution” and “more easier.” Aim for accurate, natural collocations and check spelling carefully, especially for key terms. A more precise vocabulary range would help express the causes and consequences more convincingly.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt both simple and more complex sentence forms, including explanations with “because,” examples introduced by “For instance,” and a conditional sentence beginning “if this trends continue.” The main message remains understandable, but errors in agreement, verb forms, articles, and sentence construction occur in several places. For example, “some students… they tends” has a subject–verb agreement problem, while “a difficult subjects” does not match in number. The sentence linking “Passion is another reason” to several career choices also needs clearer punctuation and structure. Practise checking each sentence for a clear subject and verb, consistent singular or plural forms, and accurate clause boundaries. Greater control would make your varied structures easier to follow.
