IELTS Writing Task 2 question

In many countries not enough students are choosing to study science at university. What are the causes of this? What effects does it have on society?

Give reasons for your answer and include relevant examples from your knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

It is becoming increasingly common for students to avoid any science related subject in university. difficulty, fear , cost etc. are some of the main factors behind this. It primarily creating a shortage of worker in many science related fields such as engineering and healthcare.

Many people tend to believe that science subjects are more difficult than others. It is because learners start to fear topics like math, physics , chemistry from a young age from the lack of good tutoring. This fear causes students to lose confidence in themselves and as a result they choose others subjects in university. Another cause is that science related subjects require a higher tuition fee in all universities. They tend to be 20-30% more expensive. Many students don't want to pay that extra fee for a science degree, therefore choosing a different major.

Science has become the backbone of our generation. Any nation that's behind in science and technology is going to stay behind. So, it is important for every country to have strong knowledge about science related topics. If most people are weak in science there won't be capable workers for many job posts which will slow down the development of a country. Also,Our society is now at such a advanced stage that we can't progress further without the knowledge of science. For example , everything is being modernized by AI now and we need to have strong knowledge about science related topics in order to fully capitalize on the use of AI.

In conclusion, lack of knowledge in science really slows down a country's progress. Therefore, the extra cost for these subjects and fear among students must be removed.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

You address both parts of the question and maintain a clear overall position: fear of difficult subjects and higher fees discourage students, while a shortage of skilled workers can hinder national development. The examples of engineering, healthcare and AI help make the effects relevant. This meets the task well, but the causes and effects are not equally developed. The claim that science degrees cost “20-30% more” is specific but is not explained or supported, and the discussion of social effects largely repeats the idea that countries will fall behind. To strengthen the response, explain more fully how fewer science graduates affect particular services or industries, and support the cost point with a clear qualification or example. The conclusion restates the main ideas but could synthesise them more precisely.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The response has a coherent overall structure: the introduction identifies the issue, the second paragraph explains causes, the third discusses effects, and the conclusion returns to the main point. Sequencing within the paragraphs is generally easy to follow, and links such as “as a result,” “therefore” and “For example” show how ideas relate. However, some connections feel mechanical, and the progression within the effects paragraph could be clearer: the claims about national progress, capable workers and AI overlap rather than building distinct points. There are also occasional punctuation and spacing problems, such as “Also,Our” and “For example ,”. Use clearer paragraph-level topic sentences and vary linking methods, while making each supporting point advance the argument rather than repeat it.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use an adequate range of topic vocabulary, including “tuition fee,” “confidence,” “capable workers,” “development” and “capitalize on,” so the main ideas are communicated clearly. There are also attempts at more formal phrasing, such as “the backbone of our generation.” However, some word choices and collocations are imprecise or repetitive: “avoid any science related subject,” “strong knowledge about science related topics” and “job posts” do not sound fully natural in this context. “Science” and “related” recur often, limiting flexibility, while “difficulty, fear, cost etc.” is an informal and incomplete opening phrase. Aim for more precise academic expressions and check compound forms and spelling, for example “science-related” and “capitalise” in British English.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt a mix of simple and complex sentences, including cause-and-effect structures such as “This fear causes students to lose confidence … and as a result they choose…” and a conditional sentence beginning “If most people are weak in science…”. These structures generally make your meaning clear. Some grammatical errors remain, however, including the sentence fragment “difficulty, fear, cost etc. are some of the main factors,” the missing verb in “It primarily creating a shortage,” and agreement or article problems in “a such a advanced stage.” There are also errors in plural forms and sentence punctuation, as in “others subjects” and “Also,Our society.” Review verb forms, articles, agreement and sentence boundaries, then proofread for consistent punctuation. Greater accuracy across the range of structures would improve control.
