Student answer (Band 6.0)

In some part of the world, students are not choosing any science major at universities. There are several reasons behind it and this has some adverse effects on society.

First and foremost, many students do not want academic burden in their university life. They become more career oriented in this stage of life. So when they find any lucrative business idea, they try to stick with it. But to do business, students need to know the basic education of corporate business world. So they tend to become more interested in business studies. Besides many science related majors have heavy courseworks with lab work. Students genuinely do not want to take this high academic difficulty. Many students think that science related jobs have limited growth, lower starting salary and huge competition in job market. Moreover, if they want stable employment, they have to complete their advanced postgraduate degrees. When they find any appealing field for instance, business studies, financial management or hotel management for them, they willingly choose those degrees. Usually, university students prefer to select their major according to the demand of that subject in job market.

However, if the ratio of students not choosing science at university increases, it could be a trouble for the country. As doctors, engineers and teachers have pivotal role in society, these fields also need huge recruitement. When the number of doctors, engineers and teachers increase, they can serve more people of the country. Shortage of scientists and professionals can be an impediment for developing new technologies, medicines and other inovations. In addition, countries become more dependent on foreign experts and their technology.

In conclusion, few students are likely to choose science subjects at university because it can be beneficial for their job market. If this trend continues the s

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

You address both causes and effects, and your position is clear: students are drawn to other fields while declining science enrolment may harm society. The causes paragraph gives relevant reasons, including demanding coursework, perceived job competition and the appeal of business-related subjects. The effects paragraph also identifies a shortage of professionals, slower innovation and dependence on foreign expertise. However, some points are not fully explained: for example, the claim that more doctors, engineers and teachers would let them serve more people needs a clearer link to the consequences of fewer science students. The conclusion is cut off after “If this trend continues the s”, so it does not complete the final implication. Develop the effects with a specific example and finish the conclusion fully.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The response has a clear overall structure: an introduction, a paragraph explaining causes, a paragraph on effects and a conclusion. The progression from students’ preferences to possible social consequences is easy to follow, and signposts such as “First and foremost,” “Besides,” and “In addition” help guide the reader. At times, however, linking is mechanical or the relationship between ideas is not explicit. For instance, the discussion of business education moves from a “lucrative business idea” to corporate education without clearly showing why this leads students away from science. The effects paragraph also groups several professions and consequences together. Use clearer referencing and explain the connection between each claim. The unfinished final sentence disrupts the ending and should be completed.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use an adequate range of vocabulary for the topic, including “academic burden,” “lucrative,” “stable employment,” “pivotal role,” and “impediment.” These choices help communicate the main ideas, and the meaning is generally clear. There are also some inaccurate or unnatural collocations and word forms, such as “in some part of the world,” “heavy courseworks,” “huge recruitement,” and “other inovations.” “Science related” is repeated, and “job market” appears several times, so more variation would make the response more precise. Aim to use natural academic collocations and check spelling carefully; for example, “coursework” is normally uncountable, and “recruitment” and “innovations” need correct spelling. More precise phrasing would strengthen the discussion without changing its ideas.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, including conditional structures such as “if they want stable employment, they have to complete…” and a subordinate clause beginning “When they find…”. Most sentences remain understandable, but some grammatical errors are noticeable. For example, “In some part of the world” needs a plural form or an article, and “As doctors, engineers and teachers have pivotal role” is missing an article before “pivotal role.” The sentence “When the number of doctors, engineers and teachers increase” also has a subject–verb agreement problem: “number” takes a singular verb. The final sentence is incomplete, which affects grammatical completeness. Review articles, agreement and sentence completion, while continuing to use varied structures.
