Student answer (Band 6.0)

In recent years ,many universities around the world have seen a decrease in the number of student choosing science subject. This essay will discuss it's reasons and it's effects on society.

To commence with, there are several reasons behind this problem. The first and formost reason is that, considerable amount of student find subjects like science hard to learn. The subect like, physics, chemistry and biology need a lot of hard work.As a result educatee avoid to choose these subject. In addition to that, science degrees are often expensive and long as compare to art and business sunjects. For instance, science degree is almost around 5 to 6 years while business degree is 4 years so student find it boring to focus on one subject for a long time.Last bust not the lest, they feel subject like IT are more attrative and pay more rather than a scientist or doctor.

Peradoxically, this trend has serious negative effects on society. The primary effect is,shortage of doctors and scientists.Provided that, fewer students will choose science ,society have less doctors to do treatments or less scientists for reaserch. As a result society have to face a huge loss. For example, during COVID-19 we needed many scientists to make vaccine.Without them society have to suffer.Another effect is that, our countries have to depend on other countries. If we do not have enough scientists or doctors ,we have to depend on other countries for treatment and reaserch. This can slow down the progress of country.

To conclude, student do not choose science because ,it is expensive, time consuming and less attractive. This cause, slow progress and shortage of scientists and doctors. Therefore,to solve this issue, government should make it intresting and less expensive.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

The response addresses both parts of the question: it gives several reasons for declining science enrolment and explains possible effects, including shortages of doctors and scientists and reliance on other countries. The COVID-19 vaccine example helps make the societal impact concrete, and the conclusion restates the main points. Some ideas, however, are less fully developed than others. The claim that science degrees are expensive and longer is supported by a comparison of course durations, but the link between this and students’ choices could be explained further. The point that IT is more attractive and better paid is also asserted without an example or explanation. To strengthen the response, develop each cause and effect with clearer reasoning and more specific support.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The essay has a clear overall structure, with an introduction, a paragraph on causes, a paragraph on effects, and a conclusion. The progression from reasons to consequences is easy to follow, and signposts such as “In addition” and “Another effect” help readers identify the main points. This gives the response a coherent arrangement, though some linking is mechanical or awkward: “To commence with,” “Peradoxically,” and “Provided that” do not always express the relationship intended. Some sentences also run ideas together, particularly in the effects paragraph, where the shortage and its consequences could be separated more clearly. Use simpler, more precise transitions and make the connection between each claim and its explanation explicit.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

The response uses enough topic-related vocabulary to communicate its main ideas, including “science degrees,” “shortage,” “scientists,” “treatments,” and “progress.” There are also attempts at more specific language, such as “time consuming” and “depend on other countries.” However, spelling errors and inaccurate word choices are noticeable and sometimes make the reader pause; examples include “formost,” “subect,” “reaserch,” and “attrative.” Some collocations are also unnatural, such as “do treatments” and “make it interesting” when referring to science as a field of study. Build accuracy by checking spelling and learning common word partnerships, and choose precise terms such as “provide treatment” or “conduct research.”

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

There is an attempt to use both simple and complex sentence forms, including cause-and-effect clauses such as “As a result…” and the conditional “If we do not have enough scientists or doctors…”. The main message is generally understandable, but errors in sentence structure, agreement, articles, and punctuation occur often enough to limit accuracy. For example, “society have less doctors” needs subject–verb agreement and a plural form, while “science degree is almost around 5 to 6 years” has an unclear grammatical structure. Commas are also frequently placed incorrectly, including after introductory phrases and before clauses. Practise building accurate sentences around one main idea, then check agreement, articles, and punctuation before adding more complex clauses.
