Student answer (Band 6.0)
In recent years, the issue of fewer students choosing to study science at university has attracted considerable attention worldwide. While some people view this trend as significant, other raise concern about its implication. This essay will discuss the two key question by examines the main causes behind the lack of students interest to study science and then discussing the effects on society.
There are several compelling reasons why students not choosing to study science at university. One major factor is that science is considered as a difficult and demanding which often leads to develop lack of interest in science subjects and students want to study easy subject that is business-oriented like management or IT. Another contributing element is poor teaching method at school and unattractive career prospects as it enables or encourage students lack of interest in science from early age because in schools science is taught theoratically not practically. For example, in pakistan pure science jobs are often low paid so parents also discourage their childrens from choosing them. Consequently, these factors explain why the phenomenon has become increasingly common.
Regarding the second question it can be argued that decline in choosing science subjects has some negative effect on society. On the one hand, shortage of scientists and researchers demonstrates clear drawbacks as country becomes dependent on foreign technology for machinery, medicines and innovation. Nevertheless, the overall impact apperas to be negative.
In conclusion, unattractive carrer prospect in science and poor education method related to science explains the rise of this issue, while lack of innovation, shortage of experts and economic loss heighlights its broader implications. Carefull management and awareness such as improving methods of science education and career opportunities can help maximise the benefits while minimising any potential disadvantages.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
The response addresses both parts of the question and gives relevant causes, including science being seen as difficult, school teaching being overly theoretical, and poor career prospects. It also identifies societal effects such as dependence on foreign technology and a shortage of researchers. These points are relevant, but they are not developed evenly: the causes receive an example about Pakistan, while the effects are mostly asserted rather than explained or illustrated. The claim that students prefer “business-oriented” subjects could also be clarified, since IT may itself involve scientific study. The conclusion introduces economic loss and lack of innovation without explaining them in the body. Develop each main effect through a clear consequence and a specific example to make the response more complete.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The essay has a clear overall structure: an introduction, a paragraph on causes, a paragraph on effects, and a conclusion. The sequence is easy to follow, and signposts such as “One major factor,” “For example,” and “In conclusion” help guide the reader. This already shows sound organisation, but some linking is mechanical or does not express the relationship accurately. For instance, “Nevertheless” introduces a statement that reinforces the negative impact rather than contrasting with the previous point. The effects paragraph is also brief and moves quickly from dependence on foreign technology to a general judgement. Use transitions that match the logic, and build clearer links between each cause or effect and its explanation. This would make progression more sustained and cohesion more flexible.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
The response uses an adequate range of topic vocabulary, including “career prospects,” “shortage of scientists and researchers,” “foreign technology,” and “innovation.” These choices make the subject clear, and there are attempts to use more formal language. However, some word choices and collocations are inaccurate or awkward, such as “lack of students interest,” “poor teaching method,” and “the overall impact apperas to be negative.” Spelling errors, including “theoratically,” “carrer,” and “heighlights,” also reduce accuracy. Aim for natural combinations such as “students’ lack of interest,” “teaching methods,” and “theoretical rather than practical.” Proofreading spelling and choosing precise collocations would help the vocabulary sound more controlled and academic.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
There is an attempt to use both simple and complex structures, including a contrast clause beginning “While some people view this trend…” and a cause-and-effect sentence beginning “Consequently.” Meaning is generally understandable, but some grammatical errors occur in both sentence construction and agreement. For example, “other raise concern” needs a plural subject and article, while “This essay will discuss the two key question by examines” combines incompatible verb forms. In “science is considered as a difficult and demanding,” the adjective phrase is incomplete, and “it enables or encourage students lack of interest” has unclear structure and agreement. Practise accurate verb patterns after “by,” subject–verb agreement, and complete adjective phrases. Editing each sentence for its main subject and verb will improve control while preserving the range attempted.
