Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0
The response identifies several relevant causes: students may expect better pay and flexibility in other fields, and they may find science difficult because of gaps in their mathematical or computing foundations. The examples of engineering and programming help illustrate these points. However, the task asks about effects on society, and this part is only briefly addressed through the suggestion that governments should improve schools and create career opportunities. The essay does not explain clearly what a shortage of science graduates means for society, such as reduced innovation or fewer skilled professionals. The position is also not consistently clear, and some examples focus more on comparing careers than explaining the causes. Develop both causes and social effects with direct, specific explanations.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0
There is some organisation: the response moves from perceived career rewards to difficulties with science, then ends with a recommendation. Connectors such as “for example,” “as a result,” and “overall” show an attempt to guide the reader. However, the progression is not consistently clear. The opening claim about a lack of future opportunities is not clearly linked to the later examples, and the paragraph beginning “nevertheless” shifts to a different cause without a clear transition. Several ideas are crowded together, while the conclusion introduces a solution rather than summarising the effects on society. Use distinct paragraphs for causes and effects, and make each paragraph develop one main point with clear links between its explanation and example.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
The response attempts vocabulary relevant to education and employment, including “flexibility,” “salary,” “mechanical or electrical engineering,” and “mathematical” foundations. These choices show an effort to discuss the topic beyond very basic terms. However, the range is limited and many spelling and word-choice errors make parts difficult to understand, for example “apportinities,” “fondal,” “ingridients,” and “succsseful.” Some expressions are also unnatural or imprecise, such as “salary half as much than” and “facilitate his way to get a degree.” Build accuracy with common academic collocations and check spelling carefully. More precise terms for social consequences, such as “skills shortage” or “technological development,” would also help address the question.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
The response attempts both simple statements and longer sentences with reasons and examples, including “As a result he would give up and change his speciality.” This shows some effort to connect clauses and express cause and consequence. However, the range of sentence structures is limited, and complex attempts are often faulty. Errors in agreement and verb forms appear in “the majority of student don't choose” and “when the student study”; infinitive patterns are also problematic in “choose study” and “for gett a good job.” Articles and sentence boundaries are inconsistent, and capitalisation and punctuation sometimes interrupt the flow. Practise forming accurate subject–verb patterns and infinitive clauses, then use shorter, controlled sentences before combining ideas into longer structures.
