IELTS Writing Task 2 question
In many countries not enough students are choosing to study science at university. What are the causes of this? What effects does it have on society?
Give reasons for your answer and include relevant examples from your knowledge or experience.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
Students are preferring other subjects than science in many countries for high study purpose. This shift can be due to the difficulty level of science subjects which is not appealing to students and career paths are also not very transparent for these courses. But as pupil are leaving science, countries will face a problem in their scientific research arena which will make them more dependent on foreign innovations and will cost more to avail those.
There are many sectors of science courses such life science, agriculture. engineering and medicine. As the study progresses, students have to enhance their knowledge with vast theories and experiments and many students do not find joy in doing all these. As a result, many pupil drop out, switch or even do not chose science in the beginning for their higher studies. Another reason is that, it requires a long time to complete these courses and by then the job sector shifts toward something else which might not be suitable with their degree and many people feel lost in search of proper jobs. For example, it requires almost over 7 years of study and practical work to become a doctor which scares many student and they change their path to something more easier with clear career path.
As students are less interested in science, there are some effects seen in the community as they have to depend on others for scientific purposes. When people are less in science, there are less research and development specially in health and engineering sectors. As a result, companies need to hire people outside their country and the cost of any goods or service will increase.
In summary, all type of studies are required to sustain a society and an imbalance can greatly affect everyone in the community. There should be enough opportunities to grow in any subject and students should be introduced to many possible career pathways in science.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
The response addresses both parts of the question and presents a clear overall explanation: demanding study and uncertain career prospects discourage students, while reduced research capacity can make countries reliant on overseas expertise and products. The examples of medical training and research in health and engineering help make these points relevant. This meets the task well, but some ideas are more fully explained than others. The long training period is illustrated, whereas the claim that job markets may shift during study is not supported with a specific example. The societal effects are also stated rather generally; explaining how shortages affect a particular service or innovation would extend the discussion and provide the fuller development needed for a stronger response.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The essay has a coherent overall structure: the opening introduces causes and effects, the second paragraph develops causes, the third discusses consequences, and the conclusion offers a recommendation. Linking phrases such as “As a result,” “Another reason,” and “In summary” make the progression easy to follow. However, cohesion is sometimes mechanical, with several sentences beginning with “As” or “As a result,” and some references are not fully clear. For example, “these courses” and “all these” require the reader to infer precisely which aspects of science study are meant. The conclusion also moves from summarising the issue to recommending opportunities without clearly connecting that recommendation to the preceding effects. More varied transitions and clearer referencing would make the organisation more flexible.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
The response uses an adequate range of topic vocabulary, including “scientific research,” “research and development,” “career pathways,” and “engineering sectors.” These terms help communicate the main ideas, and the meaning remains clear despite some imprecise choices. Several phrases are awkward or inaccurate, however, such as “for high study purpose,” “the difficulty level … is not appealing,” and “depend on others for scientific purposes.” There are also word-form and spelling slips, including “pupil” where “students” is intended, “chose” for “choose,” and “specially” where “especially” is needed. Aim for more natural academic collocations and check spelling and word forms; this would make the vocabulary more precise and controlled.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
You use both simple and complex sentence forms, including a relative clause in “which will make them more dependent” and a conditional structure in “if … shifts toward something else.” Most ideas can be understood, but some grammatical errors remain. Examples include subject–verb agreement in “the difficulty level … which is not appealing” (the intended subject is plural science subjects), “many pupil drop out,” and “there are less research.” Articles and sentence construction also need attention in “there are many sectors of science courses such life science” and “it requires almost over 7 years.” Some longer sentences combine several ideas, making the grammar harder to control. Practise agreement, articles, countable and uncountable nouns, and punctuation, while keeping complex sentences clear.
