IELTS Writing Task 2 question

In many countries not enough students are choosing to study science at university. What are the causes of this? What effects does it have on society?

Give reasons for your answer and include relevant examples from your knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

In comtemporary society, many students aren't choosing to study science at university. The main reason for this is the increased demand and opportunities of arts and commerce. The drawbacks of this choice will be noticed in the sector of science and technology.

In today's world, science isn't the only subject which ensures finiancial stability or jobs. Arts and commerce can also ensure jobs for students nowadyas. Due to social media arts students now can show their artistic qualifications over the internet gaining millions of views and earning enormous amount of money. For example, one can reach out to people who admire arts and creativity with the help of internet and as a result earn money. Similarly, business sectors of today's world have progressed far in crypto currency, stocks and real-estate. For example, many students now invest in stocks and real-estate to earn capital. These opportunities have attracted students with artistic dreams and business ideas.

On the other hand, science is required for the progress of today's society. Our entire civilisation is made on the hands of science and technology. Newer inventions, cars, buildings, better medications and therapy etc have all been possible due to science. Without science our society would crumble. Furthermore, more students in other subjects may make the job markets more saturated and as a result suffer from unemployment. That's why the balance between science, commerce and arts is important. Science can make the product, arts designs it while commerce sells it. Choosing one over the other would stop us from progressing in real time.

I believe that, students should pick subjects according to their wish. However, the presemnt situation of the world must also be taken into consideration.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

You address both parts of the question: you explain why students may prefer arts and commerce, then discuss consequences for science, technology and employment. The examples about social media and investment make the causes relevant, and your view that students should choose according to their wishes is clear. However, the effects are less fully developed than the causes. Claims such as “our society would crumble” and that other fields may become saturated are broad; explain more specifically how a shortage of science graduates could affect healthcare, research or infrastructure, for instance. The relationship between the causes and the effects could also be made more explicit. Developing these points with clearer reasoning and a more precise example would make the response more complete.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The response has a coherent overall arrangement: an introduction, a paragraph on causes, a paragraph on effects and a concluding opinion. The progression from alternative career opportunities to the importance of science is easy to follow, and signposts such as “Similarly,” “On the other hand” and “Furthermore” help guide the reader. To make the organisation more effective, ensure each paragraph has a clearly focused central point: the third paragraph moves from science’s contribution to society to employment saturation and then to the balance between fields. Some links are also mechanical, particularly repeated “For example” constructions. Use clearer references and transitions to show how each consequence follows from fewer students studying science, rather than relying mainly on general linking phrases.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use an adequate range for the topic, including terms such as “financial stability,” “artistic qualifications,” “job markets” and “unemployment.” These allow you to discuss education, careers and social consequences, and the meaning is generally clear. There are also attempts at more specific vocabulary, though some choices are inaccurate or unnatural: “increased demand and opportunities of arts and commerce” and “earn capital” do not express the intended ideas precisely. Spelling slips such as “comtemporary,” “finiancial” and “presemnt” also reduce accuracy. Aim for more natural collocations and precise academic phrasing—for example, describe students as being “attracted to career prospects” and say they “earn a profit” from investments. This would strengthen flexibility and precision.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, including subordinate clauses such as “Due to social media arts students now can show…” and the contrast introduced by “However.” Most sentences communicate their meaning, but some grammatical errors remain. In “many students aren't choosing,” the contraction is less suitable for formal academic writing; “many students are not choosing” is more appropriate. The phrase “the increased demand and opportunities of arts and commerce” has an unclear grammatical relationship, while “Our entire civilisation is made on the hands of science” has an incorrect passive construction. Punctuation is also uneven, as in “I believe that, students…”. Review sentence patterns, articles and punctuation, and check that longer sentences clearly connect their clauses.
