Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 3.5

You attempt to address both causes and effects, mentioning difficult medical studies, exam failure and parents’ inability to afford costs as possible reasons. You also suggest that students may choose IT or other subjects and that this could lead to projects and progress. However, these points are very brief and some connections are unclear, so the response only partially answers the question. The effects on society are not explained clearly, and the example about an IT graduate is unfinished. The response is also 139 words below the required minimum, leaving too little space to develop relevant ideas. To improve, explain each cause and social effect with a clear chain of reasoning and a specific example.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 3.5

There is a basic attempt to move from causes to effects, and phrases such as “on the one hand” and “for example” show awareness of linking ideas. However, the response is presented as one continuous paragraph, and the progression is difficult to follow because several points are joined without clear relationships. For instance, the shift from exam failure and family finances to students choosing English, maths and IT is abrupt. Some linking phrases are also used inaccurately, which makes the organisation less clear rather than guiding the reader. Use separate paragraphs for causes and effects, and organise each paragraph around one main point followed by an explanation and example.

Lexical Resource: Band 4.5

You use some vocabulary relevant to the topic, including “science,” “exams,” “society,” “subject,” “successful” and “progress.” This gives the reader a general sense of the subject matter. However, the range is limited, and several word choices or combinations are unclear, such as “science reading books,” “ahead progress” and “complete your degree in it filed.” Spelling errors, including “oftan,” “moth” and “constt,” also make parts of the response harder to understand. Build a topic vocabulary set for education and society, and practise using words in accurate combinations—for example, describing students as “pursuing a science degree” or society as facing a “shortage of skilled scientists.”

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 4.5

You attempt to connect ideas in longer sentences, including the explanation beginning “because medical study are very difficult,” and you use simple clauses to communicate basic points. However, control of sentence structure is inconsistent, and errors in agreement, verb forms, articles and pronouns frequently make the meaning unclear. Examples include “not enough student are choosing,” “medical study are,” “he fails,” and “one student are complete your degree.” Sentence boundaries and punctuation are also unreliable, with several ideas run together. Practise accurate simple sentence patterns first, such as “Many students do not choose science because the courses are demanding,” then add one clear subordinate clause at a time.
