Student answer (Band 5.5)

In many countries, an insufficient number of students are choosing science at university to study. This essay will dissuss the causes and effects it does on our society.

To begin with, there are several reasons why students are not choosing science like the duration of courses and they are also very hard as compared with different streams. The main reason for not opting for science is the length of the course some of the degrees required more than 5 years. For example, if someone wants to became a doctor they require more years of study as compared with information technology and they are a lot easy as compared with science stream.

However, the decline in science graduates can causes a lots of problem in our society like shortages of doctors and even unemployment in different sectors will increase. Due to high demand of other streams there will be shortage of jobs which will leads to unemployment. The companies will give opportuinites to people from other state or country because they lack the qualified employee. For instance, some of the pharma companies lacks qualified researchers so they give jobs to people from other country. The government should change some of the policies in our education system so that people can opt for science.

In conclusion, I believe the decline in science graduates will cause a lot of problems like shortage of worker and unemployment in other sectors will increase. To solve this the government should take the initiative make some changes in our education system so that the science graduates increase in our society.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5

You address both parts of the question and maintain a clear focus on the decline in science study. You identify course length and difficulty as causes, and discuss possible social effects, including shortages of doctors and researchers and increased unemployment. The examples about medical training and pharmaceutical companies help make these points relevant. However, the causes are only briefly explained, and the link between a shortage of science graduates and unemployment in other sectors is unclear: explain the mechanism or use a more direct consequence. The proposed government changes are also general rather than a developed response to the causes. More explanation and specific support for each main idea would make the response more complete and convincing.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The response has a recognisable overall structure: an introduction, a paragraph on causes, one on effects, and a conclusion. Signposting such as “To begin with,” “However,” and “In conclusion” helps readers follow the main stages. Within paragraphs, however, progression is sometimes weakened by unclear links. For example, the move from high demand for other streams to a shortage of jobs and then unemployment is difficult to follow, and “they” in the comparison with information technology has an unclear reference. The conclusion largely repeats the effects and recommendation rather than bringing the argument together. Use clearer links between cause and consequence, and make references explicit, so cohesion feels less mechanical.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use enough topic-related vocabulary to communicate the main ideas, including “science graduates,” “qualified researchers,” “education system,” and “shortage.” There are also attempts at more specific terms, such as “pharma companies.” However, the range is limited and several choices or forms are inaccurate, which sometimes makes the meaning less natural: “a lots of problem,” “opportuinites,” and “qualified employee” are examples. Repetition of “shortage,” “science,” and “other” also limits precision. Build a wider set of accurate collocations for education and employment, and check spelling and singular/plural forms. More precise wording would help distinguish a shortage of skilled workers from unemployment in unrelated sectors.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

You attempt both simple and more complex sentences, including a conditional example (“if someone wants to became a doctor”) and a result clause beginning “because.” However, control is inconsistent, and errors occur in basic sentence patterns as well as longer structures. Examples include “the length of the course some of the degrees required,” which needs clearer punctuation or a linking word, “can causes,” “which will leads,” and “companies lacks.” There are also problems with verb forms and agreement, such as “wants to became.” These errors can make relationships between ideas harder to understand. Practise accurate subject–verb agreement and verb forms first, then build longer sentences with clear clause boundaries and punctuation.
