IELTS Writing Task 2 question
In many countries not enough students are choosing to study science at university. What are the causes of this? What effects does it have on society?
Give reasons for your answer and include relevant examples from your knowledge or experience.
Student answer (Band 5.5)
In several countries many students do not choose to study science at university because they found hard to study science and have less career opportunities. in this developed era students are more interested in AI, marketing, entrepreneur rather than becoming an engineer or a doctor.
in my perspective I firmly believed that, students found science more difficult they found hard to study biology physics, chemistry In addition the merit of science subject is so high many students failed the test for instance in Pakistan you have to clear a test after high secondary school to become a doctor but many students failed that exam due to higher merit.
Considerably ,Now the world become more developed so students interest is diverted towards AI, business, marketing they contemplate that these fields can generate more money easily rather than science and has broader career opportunities. and another factor, that is effecting students to not choose science is some students who are less privileged they can not afford tuition fee so government should provide scholarships like need base scholarship due to this students who are intelligent and interested in science can take admission without any money pressure.
Moreover, few students choosing science has negative impact on society, For instance having less invention, no new discoveries for the cure of many diseases, few scientist, however if we talk about scientist who are discovering life in other planet so for this we new and intelligent students who can pursue science for better future of society.
In conclusion I would say that science is as much important as other fields and I think that government should provide better scholarships and the merit should less so many students can pass the exam.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
You address both parts of the question and give a clear overall view that science is important. The causes you identify include perceived difficulty, demanding entrance requirements, and students’ attraction to fields such as AI and marketing; the Pakistan medical-entry example makes one point more concrete. You also identify social consequences, including fewer inventions and discoveries that could help treat disease. However, the effects are less fully explained than the causes, and the point about discovering life on other planets is not clearly connected to the wider impact on society. Develop each main idea with a clearer explanation or example, and make the conclusion summarise both causes and effects rather than focusing mainly on scholarships and admission standards.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5
The response has an overall structure, moving from causes to effects and then to a conclusion, and paragraphing helps distinguish these sections. Some linking expressions, such as “In addition” and “Moreover,” show how ideas relate. However, progression within paragraphs is sometimes difficult to follow: the discussion of affordability and scholarships appears alongside causes without a clear transition, while the effects paragraph shifts from disease research to life on other planets. Connect each point explicitly and keep related ideas together. Avoid relying on repeated or awkward transitions such as “another factor” and “for instance”; clearer topic sentences and more precise referencing would make the argument easier to follow.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use relevant vocabulary for the topic, including “merit,” “scholarships,” “discoveries,” and “career opportunities,” and the reader can generally understand your intended meaning. There are also attempts at more specific phrasing, such as “less privileged” and “need base scholarship.” However, several word choices and collocations are inaccurate or informal, including “found hard to study,” “the world become more developed,” and “generate more money easily.” Repetition of “students,” “science,” and “many” also limits the range. Aim for more precise academic expressions and check word forms and spelling; this would make your ideas clearer and more natural without changing their meaning.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
You attempt both simple and more complex sentences, including explanations with “because” and examples introduced by “for instance.” This gives you a basis for expressing cause and effect. However, control is inconsistent, and errors in verb forms, agreement, articles, sentence boundaries, and punctuation sometimes make the reader work to understand the message. For example, “students found science more difficult” needs a consistent tense, while “the world become more developed” has an incorrect verb form. Several sentences run together, particularly the opening and the paragraph beginning “Considerably,” and capitalisation after full stops is often missing. Practise building complete sentences and proofreading for tense, agreement, and punctuation.
