Student answer (Band 6.0)
Nowadays, many students are not studying science at university in many countries. This essay will discuss the main reasons for this trend such as lower budget and difficult subjects and explain its effect on society.
On the one hand, the major reasons of not studying science is the subjects. Students find it difficult to study these subjects as it needs higher attention and hard work. For example, students studying in science stream have to attend classes. The time of the classes is more than the school timing and they have to complete their practical as well as theory, which could be challenging. Another reason to be consider is that they have lower budget. Thesedays, education is also becoming expensive. Many intelligent students have an urge to study science but they could not afford it. For example, students who scored well in science subject and have interest to study science but they are not financially stronger. Their parents cannot afford this stream. As a result, students have to choose other stream which could be cheaper than science stream.
On the other hand, the effects of not studying science could be the shortage of doctors, scientist and researchers. Students may choose other fields which decreases the number of students in science field. This leads to less scientific researches and technology development. For example, a country with no scientist may not develop in technolgy and cannot research in science. As a result, economy, environmental and health related issues cannot be fulfilled. Moreover, countries have lower heathcare facilities. Due to less doctors, patients cannot be revived properly. This results in higher health issues which decreases the population of that country.
In conclusion, the lack of interest in studying science at university may be the difficulty of these subjects or lower financial support. As a result, countries have a shortage of doctors, scientists and researchers, lower heathcare facilities and also have lower development in research as well as technology.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
The response addresses both parts of the question: it identifies difficulty and financial barriers as causes, then discusses possible effects such as fewer doctors and researchers and slower technological development. These points are relevant, and the examples about students being unable to afford science courses help explain the financial cause. However, some ideas are less fully developed than others. The claim that science students have longer classes and practical work is mentioned but not clearly connected to why this discourages university study. Likewise, the link from fewer doctors to population decline is asserted rather than explained. Develop each cause-and-effect chain with a clearer explanation or a specific, plausible example to make the response more convincing.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The essay has a clear overall structure: an introduction, separate paragraphs for causes and effects, and a conclusion that restates the main points. The contrastive signposts “On the one hand” and “On the other hand” make the two sections easy to follow, and ideas generally progress in a sensible order. This is a strong foundation, with some features of more flexible organisation. However, links between individual claims are occasionally mechanical or unclear. For example, “As a result” introduces several different consequences, while the connection between fewer doctors and a declining population is not made explicit. Use transitions selectively and make the relationship between each claim and its consequence clear; this would make cohesion more natural and precise.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
The response uses enough topic-related vocabulary to communicate its main ideas, including “scientists,” “researchers,” “scientific research,” “technology development,” and “healthcare facilities.” It also attempts some less common or academic expressions, such as “financial support” and “scientific stream,” showing an effort to discuss the topic beyond basic language. However, word choice and collocation are often inaccurate or repetitive: “lower budget” does not clearly describe students’ financial circumstances, and “complete their practical” is not a natural phrase. There are also spelling errors, including “technolgy” and “heathcare.” Build a more precise range of topic vocabulary, check spelling, and learn common word partnerships so that the intended meaning is consistently clear.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
The essay includes both simple sentences and attempts at more complex structures, including clauses with “as,” “which,” and “but.” Most of the meaning remains understandable, and the paragraph-level organisation helps the reader follow the argument. Some grammatical errors nevertheless recur. For example, “the major reasons … is” has a subject–verb agreement problem, while “Another reason to be consider” uses an incorrect verb form. There are also issues with articles and plurals in phrases such as “shortage of doctors, scientist and researchers.” To improve, check agreement between subjects and verbs, use the correct infinitive or passive form, and review articles and plural nouns. Aim to make complex sentences accurate before adding further structural variety.
