Student answer (Band 6.0)

Sufficient number of students are not showing interest in science in numerous countries. This is because those students feel weak in science and are willing to get a traditional job. However, this issue can create a scarcity of professionals in some particular fields and societal development can lag behind technologically.

A plenty of students are not selecting science for studing in university. Most of them are afraid of attaining in complex calculations, critical thinking and data analyses which are the core part of studing science. Additionally, they prefer doing traditional job such as banking and farming for which studying in science is not required. For example, most of the students who are not taking science related subjects in university in Bangladesh are willing to start their own business in future.

Consequently, society will be impacted from different aspects. Firstly, the number of skilled individuals will dropped, for instance, the society will experience a lack of doctors and engineers who are crucial for the health care service and the development of the city. Secondly, because of decreasing the science based scholars, the society will barely develop technologically. For example, after inventing a new technology, it takes a long period to reach to a under developed country as there are poor number of science experts. Eventually, the development of the society become very slow.

In conclusion, a huge number of students are not taking science related subjects in university because they want to avoid those subjects for their personal weakness and are willing to pursue a old fashioned job. Nevertheless, society will be effected as it will have a few number of adept people on regarding fields for which the technological development will be hampered.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

The response addresses both parts of the question: it identifies students’ fear of demanding science subjects and preference for other careers as causes, then explains possible shortages of doctors and engineers and slower technological progress. The Bangladesh example gives the causes some context, while the examples of healthcare and technology support the effects. However, some ideas are asserted rather than fully explained. For instance, the link between choosing banking or farming and avoiding science could be clarified, and the claim that technology takes longer to reach developing countries needs a more specific explanation. The conclusion restates the main points but adds little development. To strengthen the response, explain the causes and consequences in more depth and make the examples more precise.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The essay has a clear overall structure: an introduction, a paragraph on causes, one on effects, and a conclusion. The progression from reasons to consequences is easy to follow, and signposts such as “Additionally,” “Firstly,” and “Secondly” help guide the reader. However, cohesion is sometimes mechanical, with several points introduced through formulaic sequencing. Some connections are also unclear: “Consequently” signals effects, but the relationship between the shortage of science graduates and the examples that follow could be made more explicit. Repeated references to “society” and “development” also make the flow less varied. Use clearer links between each claim and its explanation, and vary referencing so that the relationships between ideas remain precise.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

The response uses relevant topic vocabulary, including “critical thinking,” “data analyses,” “skilled individuals,” and “technologically,” and the main meaning remains clear. It also attempts less common expressions such as “scarcity of professionals” and “societal development.” However, several word choices and collocations are inaccurate or unnatural, including “attaining in complex calculations,” “a plenty of students,” “poor number of science experts,” and “adept people on regarding fields.” Spelling and word-form errors such as “studing” and “under developed” also reduce control. Aim for more natural academic combinations—for example, “struggle with complex calculations” and “a shortage of science specialists”—and check spelling and word forms carefully.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

There is a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, including a relative clause in “doctors and engineers who are crucial” and a conditional-style explanation beginning “as there are…”. Most sentences communicate the intended meaning, but some grammatical errors recur. Examples include “the number of skilled individuals will dropped” (verb form), “the society development become” (subject–verb agreement), “a old fashioned job” (article), and “it takes a long period to reach to a under developed country” (article and sentence construction). The final sentence also has an unclear grammatical structure. These errors do not generally prevent understanding, but they limit accuracy. Practise verb forms after modal verbs, agreement, articles, and building clear cause-and-effect clauses; then proofread each sentence for these patterns.
