IELTS Writing Task 2 question
In many countries not enough students are choosing to study science at university. What are the causes of this? What effects does it have on society?
Give reasons for your answer and include relevant examples from your knowledge or experience.
Student answer (Band 5.5)
To study science is not the priority of majority pupils at higher education institutes, in enormous countries. This essay will explain the potential causes of this situation.
The reasons of this deeply rooted distressing situation are multifaceted. At the outset, saturation of science graduates, which are still unemployed, demotivates the coming batches of students to adopt natural science. Unemployment acts as a biggest setback, thereby decreasing the percentage of the admissions in the fresh classes. For instance, my younger sister took admission in IT, owing to the unemployment of me and my elder sister.
Other factor that may have weightage is the time consuming and complicated research practices in science cources. Scientific research, being time consuming and difficult to bring expected outcomes, set backs students from taking admission in science, For instance, few students, who can not bring out expected results in given time have to pay for an extra semester, which can cost them a-lot. I have seen few senior students still working on their projects, despite completing two whole years of their masters degree.
Another potential reason could be the less paying job markeet for science graduates. More than 50% of fresh science graduates apply for teaching in private academic institutes, where they are payed less than they deserve, furthermore his less paying trend has become a viscios cycle so its not goint to change in near future. Spending more on a degree and settling for such career is not a wise descision, eventually declines the selection of that particular descipline by future aspirants. I worker for 2 years in this sector and repremended on my descion to choose science, throughout the time.
Consequently, unemployment, inordinately difficult research patterns and less rewarding employment scope is making science less popular descipline, where it used to be most rewarding and most dominating field in past years.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.5
The response identifies several plausible causes: unemployment among science graduates, demanding research, and low-paid work. The personal examples about your sisters and your experience in private education help make these points relevant. However, the task asks both what causes the decline and what effects it has on society, while the essay focuses almost entirely on causes. The final paragraph repeats those causes rather than explaining consequences such as shortages of researchers, slower technological development, or reduced capacity to address public-health and environmental problems. Some claims, including the figure that more than half of graduates seek teaching work, are asserted without explanation. Address both parts explicitly and develop each main idea with a clear explanation and example.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The essay has a coherent overall arrangement: an introduction is followed by three separate cause paragraphs and a concluding summary. Sequencing phrases such as “At the outset,” “Another factor,” and “Consequently” help readers follow the progression. Within paragraphs, however, links can feel mechanical, and some references are unclear; for example, “this less paying trend” does not connect smoothly to the preceding sentence. The conclusion also restates the causes without moving the discussion forward. To improve, use transitions that show the precise relationship between ideas, make pronoun references unmistakable, and organise the response around both causes and societal effects, giving each part a clear place in the essay.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You attempt a range of topic-related vocabulary, including “unemployment,” “scientific research,” “graduates,” and “employment scope,” and some choices convey the intended meaning. However, inaccurate word choice, collocation, and spelling are noticeable and sometimes make the reader pause. Examples include “the reasons of,” “a biggest setback,” “less paying job markeet,” and “viscios cycle”; “descipline” and “payed” also show spelling problems. Some expressions, such as “deeply rooted distressing situation” and “weightage,” sound unnatural in this context. Aim for accurate, natural academic phrasing rather than adding elaborate wording: check collocations and spelling, and choose precise terms for employment prospects and research demands.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
There are attempts at complex structures, including participle phrases such as “Scientific research, being time consuming…” and clauses beginning “which” and “owing to.” These show some range, but control is inconsistent, and errors in sentence structure, agreement, articles, and punctuation recur. For example, “Other factor that may have weightage is…” needs a determiner and a clearer grammatical construction; “unemployment… demotivates” is followed by the awkward structure “decreasing the percentage of the admissions.” The long sentence beginning “More than 50%” also joins several ideas without clear punctuation or clause control. Practise building accurate sentences first, then extend them with subordinate clauses; check articles, singular/plural agreement, and sentence boundaries during revision.
