IELTS Writing Task 2 question

In many countries not enough students are choosing to study science at university. What are the causes of this? What effects does it have on society?

Give reasons for your answer and include relevant examples from your knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 5.5)

Nowadays, fewer students are choosing to study science at universities. This is mainly because science subjects are very difficult than other new professions that are becoming very popular among youngsters. This may result in shortage of doctors, scientists and other medical related professions in the society in near future.I explain my thesis on its causes and effects in the following lines.

From my perspective, young ones are losing their interest in science chiefly because there are much more opportunities than science and engineering that were very famous in past few decates.Another reason is that the science is now being taught in universities is very difficult as there is much more studies are being done on its numerous areas. In the past, there was no option of not doing a job that you can just provide your digital services to anyone in the past and earn money. But, as for now the whole world is transformed into a global village.I remember, when i started my online shop on etsy my father told me that he always wanted to do something like that as there were no opportunities to do so.

No doubt, if the numbers of science students kept on decreasing the society may face a shortage of science related jobs like doctors and scientists.Like as now, Pakistan is facing the problem of shortage in dentists.

In conclusion, I want to say that there is no doubt that technology is becoming more and more powerfull but we should not forget that after all, we are humans and we have to focus on study related to science as we evolved through science.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5

You address both causes and effects, and your central view—that students are drawn away from science by other opportunities and perceived difficulty—is identifiable. The example of your online shop helps illustrate how new career paths can attract young people, while the reference to a shortage of dentists in Pakistan gives a relevant social effect. However, the causes are not fully explained: “much more opportunities” is vague, and the claim that university science is difficult needs a clearer explanation of what makes it so or why this discourages students. The effects are also narrow, focusing mainly on shortages of doctors and scientists. Develop the consequences for society more broadly, such as impacts on healthcare, research, or technological development, and support each point with a specific explanation or example.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5

The response has a recognisable introduction, two body paragraphs, and a conclusion, and the reader can generally follow the movement from causes to effects. Phrases such as “Another reason” and “In conclusion” help signal the structure. However, progression within the first body paragraph is uneven: the discussion moves from career opportunities to difficult university courses, then to digital services and a personal anecdote without clearly connecting each point. Some linking is repetitive or awkward, as in “Like as now,” and the opening sentence of the effects paragraph does not develop the point beyond a general prediction. Organise each body paragraph around one clear main idea, then explain and illustrate it before moving on. Use references and transitions that make the relationship between examples and claims explicit.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use some topic-relevant vocabulary, including “science subjects,” “global village,” “shortage,” and “digital services,” and the personal example gives you a way to discuss changing career opportunities. However, the range is limited and several choices or combinations are inaccurate or unclear, which sometimes makes the argument harder to understand. For example, “other new professions” does not clearly identify the alternatives, and “science related jobs like doctors and scientists” is imprecise because these are professions rather than jobs in a broad category. There are also spelling errors such as “decates” and “powerfull.” Aim for precise academic collocations and check spelling; for instance, distinguish between “science-related careers” and “scientific research,” and name the alternative fields attracting students.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

You attempt both simple and more complex sentences, including a conditional structure in “if the numbers of science students kept on decreasing,” and most of the main ideas remain understandable. However, complex constructions are often faulty, and errors occur frequently enough to make some sentences difficult to follow. Examples include “science subjects are very difficult than,” “there are much more studies are being done,” and “the science that is now being taught … is very difficult,” where comparisons, clause structure, and agreement need attention. There are also problems with articles, plurals, and punctuation, such as “the society” and missing spaces after full stops. Practise building accurate sentences with one main clause and a clearly formed subordinate clause, then proofread for verb forms, agreement, and sentence boundaries.
