IELTS Writing Task 2 question
In many countries not enough students are choosing to study science at university. What are the causes of this? What effects does it have on society?
Give reasons for your answer and include relevant examples from your knowledge or experience.
Student answer (Band 5.5)
In many countries there is an increasing decline in the number of students willing to take science as their main subject. This trend is on the rise because of the level of difficulty it has and the rising alternative career paths. As it continues societies might see shortage in specialized personalities and sectors.
One major reason students are refusing to take on science as their main form of study is because of its difficult study pattern. Generally, this subject has a lot of mathmatical and scientific courses that a student needs to solve. As a result, takers of this subject have to spent major proportion of their time in study. Today's generation are increasingly less interested in spending so much time and effort in that matter. apart from that nowadays children see so many easy career options in front of them. with the development of technology and social media they can decide on a easy career from a little age. Which also contributes to the matter.
However, as much as it benefitsthose student to save time and spent less worried days, it impact society incredibly. With this declining trend society wouls lose specialized doctore, engineers or maybe scientific researchers. this might not be evident right away but it would definitely hamper society in long term.
in conclusion, students are increasingly less interested in taking science due to the difficulty and effort it takes to continue. Society can be grately impacted by this trend be it by losing specialized sectors or by losing professionals in scientific positions.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5
You address both parts of the question: you identify perceived difficulty and the appeal of other career paths as causes, then describe possible shortages of doctors, engineers and researchers as social effects. The response also maintains a relevant overall position. However, the ideas are only partly developed, which fits this level: the claim that science involves substantial mathematics is not supported with a concrete example, and the discussion of alternative careers remains general. The effects paragraph names professions that could be lost but does not explain in detail how shortages would affect services, innovation or everyday life. Develop each main point with a clear explanation and a relevant example to make the response more complete and persuasive.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The response has a recognisable structure: an introduction, a paragraph on causes, a paragraph on effects and a conclusion. This gives the reader an overall route through the answer, and phrases such as “As a result” and “In conclusion” help signal relationships. However, progression within paragraphs is sometimes abrupt. The shift from difficult study to easy career options would be clearer if each cause were separated or linked with a more explicit transition. The sentence beginning “Which also contributes to the matter” is a fragment and does not connect smoothly to the preceding idea. Use referencing and linking expressions more precisely, and ensure each paragraph develops one central point in a logical sequence.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use relevant topic vocabulary, including “scientific researchers,” “specialized,” “career paths” and “declining trend,” so the main ideas are generally understandable. There are also attempts at less common phrasing, such as “hamper society,” though some combinations are unnatural or imprecise: “specialized personalities” does not clearly mean qualified professionals, and “easy career” is too broad for the point being made. Spelling errors such as “mathmatical,” “wouls,” “doctore” and “grately” are noticeable and weaken control. Build a more precise range of academic collocations, and proofread spelling and word forms so that vocabulary choices communicate your intended meaning naturally.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
You attempt both simple and more complex sentence forms, including a cause-and-effect structure in “As a result, takers of this subject have to…” and a contrast introduced by “However.” Meaning is usually recoverable, but errors in sentence construction and control remain noticeable. For example, “Which also contributes to the matter” is an incomplete sentence, while “students are refusing … is because” creates an awkward structure. There are also errors in agreement and verb forms, as in “Today's generation are” and “it benefitsthose student.” Capitalisation after full stops is inconsistent, including “apart from that” and “in conclusion.” Practise complete clauses, subject–verb agreement and accurate punctuation while retaining your attempts at complex sentences.
