Student answer (Band 6.0)

In numerous nations, students tend to prioritize studying arts, social science and business rather than science at the university level. There are several reasons for studemts not choosing science which includes following one's own passion and not having enough opportunities in subject related job market. I think it is a positive change for the society as the graduates can be utilized in more sectors according to their knowledge and it would be a win-win situation for all.

Undergraduate students are now more inclined towards social science and business related majors. It helps to create a diverse set of professionals for each fields and when someone has a clear vision rather than following the trend, the individual can outperform and shine in own sphere. Even in the last decade, students used to choose science as their major which changed drastically over the years. Also, the access of internet is widely available and it is way too easier for them to find out their desirable path. However, the crucial aspect has always been the employment after graduating. Now there are more graduates with less job security in the science fields, to be specific in the pure science genre.

I believe that choosing social science majors over the science benefits the society. We do not need a lot of scientists in a specific field, rather fewer in number but dedication towards the work is crucial. Also, for the betterment of the communities, social scientists are playing a pivotal role which help to bind the people together. So, it is better to have people with expertise for various fields, rather than competing for a specific one.

To sum up, students are now choosing diverse educational paths but at the end of the day these paths needs to be connected which should only focus to make a positive impact to the society. If the knowledge is used properly, it would not only be beneficial for a specific person, but also for the communities too.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5

You address both causes and effects, and your position—that the shift can benefit society—is clear in the introduction and conclusion. The causes you identify include students following their interests, easier access to information about study options, and concerns about employment and job security in pure science. However, these points are not equally developed: the employment concern is relevant but would benefit from a specific example or explanation of why science jobs seem less secure. The effects discussion focuses mainly on the benefits of having professionals in varied fields, while the claim that society needs fewer scientists is asserted rather than supported. Develop the social consequences more fully and connect each example directly to the question.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5

The response has a recognisable structure, with an introduction, separate body paragraphs and a conclusion, and the ideas generally move from causes to effects. Linking expressions such as “However,” “Also” and “To sum up” help signal relationships. At times, though, progression is less clear: the second paragraph moves from professional diversity to students’ personal vision, internet access and employment without fully showing how these points connect. Some references are also broad, as in “these paths” and “the individual,” so readers must infer exactly which ideas they refer to. Group related causes together, then organise the effects in a distinct paragraph, using clearer links between each claim and its explanation.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use an adequate range of topic vocabulary, including “job security,” “pure science,” “graduates,” “expertise” and “social scientists.” These choices make the main ideas understandable, and phrases such as “pivotal role” show an attempt to use less common language. Some word choices and collocations are inaccurate or awkward, however, including “access of internet,” “shine in own sphere,” and “benefits the society.” There is also a spelling error in “studemts.” Aim for more natural academic combinations and check articles and prepositions as part of vocabulary editing. More precise terms for the employment situation and the consequences for society would also help you express your ideas with greater clarity.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, including subordinate clauses such as “when someone has a clear vision” and the conditional “If the knowledge is used properly.” Most sentences remain understandable, but some grammatical errors occur. For example, “which includes following” has a subject–verb agreement problem, while “each fields” and “these paths needs” have number-agreement errors. Articles and sentence construction also need attention in phrases such as “over the science” and “which help to bind the people together.” Review agreement between subjects and verbs, singular and plural nouns, and article use. More consistently accurate complex sentences would make the argument easier to follow.
