The number of students taking science disciplines at university in most countries is significantly low. These trend might pose a significant threat mostly to the developing countries as it may reduce innovation in science sector. This essay eill discuss the causes and the effects I may have on the society.

The low number of students taking science subjects at the university may be attributed to preconceived belief that science subjects are not only demanding, but also challenging. Due to this mentality students may prioritise taking theoritical subjects rather than science subject. For instance, in Kenya , there is usually a misconception that science is usually reserved for the genius students, consequently, creating fear among learners. In addition, with the proliferation of social media, most students aspire to be socialites and content creators, as they have role models who are affluent , and popular thanks to social media platforms. The recent development of social media platform has influenced learners to opt for other courses other than science.

This development may pose a significant threat to the society. Science subjects usually play an instrumental role in the innovation and creativity in the society. Science usually entail practicals, which may boost analytical skills of the learners who pursue science as a discipline.Experiments conducted may offer a viable solutions to challenges in the society. For example ; During the pandemic , scientists from China and USA came up with the cure to corona virus, though it wasnt a walk in the park. This shows pivotal role played by science in alleviating pain among the members of public.

In conclusion, the trend of a few students taking science subject is lead by negative beliefs and change in aspiration from students. This may pose a significant threat to the society as it reduces creativity and innovation.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

You address both causes and effects, and your position is clear: misconceptions about science and changing aspirations reduce enrolment, while fewer science students may weaken innovation. The Kenya example supports the first cause, and the pandemic example illustrates science’s social value. This meets the task well, but the two effects are not developed equally: innovation and creativity are mentioned, while the broader consequences of fewer graduates—such as shortages of researchers, health professionals, or technical expertise—are not explained. The pandemic example also shows what scientists can achieve, rather than directly explaining what society loses when fewer students study science. Develop that cause-and-effect link and extend each main idea with a specific consequence to make the response more complete.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The response has a clear overall structure: an introduction, a paragraph on causes, one on effects, and a conclusion. The progression from misconceptions to social-media influences is easy to follow, and phrases such as “For instance” and “In addition” help signal examples and added points. However, some connections are mechanical or unclear. “This development” does not precisely identify which change is being discussed, and the conclusion repeats the introduction’s points without adding a clear synthesis. The effects paragraph also moves from practical skills to pandemic research without fully explaining the link between them. Use more precise referencing and connect each example explicitly to the paragraph’s main claim; this would make the progression more consistently smooth.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use an adequate range of topic vocabulary, including “preconceived belief,” “proliferation of social media,” “analytical skills,” and “innovation and creativity.” These choices show an effort to use less common language, and the meaning is generally clear. Some word choices and collocations are inaccurate or awkward, however: “theoretical subjects” is not a clear contrast with science, “socialites” may not express the intended career aspiration, and “the cure to corona virus” is imprecise. There are also spelling errors such as “theoritical” and “eill.” Aim for more natural academic collocations and precise terms—for example, distinguish science from humanities or social sciences, and refer to vaccines or treatments rather than a single cure.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt both simple and complex sentence forms, including a cause-and-effect construction with “Due to this mentality” and a relative clause in “role models who are affluent.” The main ideas remain understandable, but grammatical control is uneven, with errors in agreement, articles, verb forms, and sentence boundaries. For example, “These trend might” should have plural agreement, while “This essay eill discuss … I may have” contains errors that obscure the intended meaning. In “science subjects … is lead,” the subject and verb do not agree, and the final sentence needs a clearer grammatical construction. Review agreement and verb forms, and proofread punctuation and spacing; more consistently accurate complex sentences would strengthen this criterion.
