Student answer (Band 5.5)

Some argue that students who are selecting science at a university is not enough. It is mainly because the depth and complexity of the subject. Because of this, the society will have job vacancies in the science field.

Not only scinece is a hard and complex subject, it is the root of developing new techonologies. Compared to someone who studies bussiness at a university, science student experience more stress and complex subject matter. This is the main reason people do not choose science as their field at university. For instance, at my university, in our science class, there were only 10 students. However, in the art class at the same university there were more than 60 students. Therefore, it became obvious that there not many students choose science as their field of study at university. The complexity and hard work scared the student and led to choose other fields instead.

When the students are not choosing the science as their field of study, not all the effects are eminent. There are some short-term and long-term effects to the public. Among the short-term effects new job openings will remain open due to lack of students. Long-term effect would be government will have to find the essential employers from other countries. For example, In the UK, there is a shortage of doctors and nurses. It is because there are not enough students are choosing scinece as their field at the university. Therefore, the government have to recruite doctors and nurses from other countries which is not an ideal solution.

In conclusion, students are not selecting science because it complexity and hard work. because of this, society is facing major problems such technological downfall and abundant of job vacanices that might have to recruite from overseas.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

You address both parts of the question: you identify the perceived difficulty of science as a cause and discuss vacancies and overseas recruitment as social effects. The university class-size comparison gives a relevant example, and the short-term/long-term distinction helps cover consequences. However, some points are asserted rather than fully explained. For instance, the link between studying science and shortages of doctors and nurses is not made precise, since these professions require specific training and are not all simply science degrees. The conclusion also introduces “technological downfall” without developing this effect in the body. To strengthen the response, explain more clearly how fewer science graduates affect particular sectors and support each effect with a focused example.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The response has a clear overall structure: an introduction, a paragraph on causes, one on effects, and a conclusion. The progression from the difficulty of science to its possible consequences is generally easy to follow, and signposts such as “For instance,” “However,” and “In conclusion” help guide the reader. At times, though, linking is mechanical or the relationship between ideas is unclear. “Not only science is a hard and complex subject” does not connect smoothly to the claim about technology, while “Therefore” is used to repeat a point rather than advance it. Some references, such as “this” in the conclusion, could identify the consequence more precisely. Use clearer topic sentences and connect each example explicitly to the claim it supports.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

You use enough topic-related vocabulary to communicate the main ideas, including “complexity,” “job openings,” “shortage,” and “long-term effects.” However, the range is limited and several word-choice, collocation, and spelling problems make the writing less precise. Examples include “eminent” for “evident,” “abundant of job vacancies,” and “recruite.” “Science” and “complex” are also repeated frequently, and “technological downfall” is an imprecise description of the possible social impact. Aim to use accurate collocations and vary repeated terms—for example, refer to “science-related degrees,” “technical fields,” or “a shortage of qualified professionals.” Proofreading spelling and word forms would also improve clarity.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

You attempt both simple and more complex sentence forms, including a contrast with “Compared to someone who studies business…” and a conditional-style explanation of consequences. Meaning is generally recoverable, but errors in sentence construction, agreement, articles, and verb forms occur across the response. For example, “students who are selecting science … is not enough” has a subject–verb and construction problem; “there are not enough students are choosing” combines two verb patterns; and “the government have to find” has agreement and modal-form issues. The opening “Because of this” is also a fragment when separated from the preceding sentence. Practise building complete clauses and checking subject–verb agreement, articles, and verb patterns, while retaining some complex structures.
