In many countries not enough students are choosing to study science at university. What are the causes of this? What effects does it have on society?

Give reasons for your answer and include relevant examples from your knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

In most of the countries less amount of students are considering to study science at university. There are plenty of causes of this issue in which having poor faculty for science subjects and unequipped laboratories are the major ones. These causes have bad effects on society as country will unable to produce competent scientist as well as it cannot become a developed country without having science technology advancement.

First and foremost, Many countries are running into the technology development race, it is only possible when a country have good scientists and advance technology. However, unfortunately majority of students do not want to study science because they find it difficult and complex as compare to arts or ecommerce subjects. Other factor for not choosing science is that many universities do have equipped laboratories consequently, students lose their interest in experiments and find it boring or difficult. For Instance, I study ecommerce because my college had rotten and expired sea animals in jars available for experiments and also had broken apparatus.

In addition to this, There are significant gap in developed and developing countries because these causes do effect any country's economy and its growth in technology, If any nation has not sufficient scientists for medical, information technology and others industries than it can lead towards the downfall. For example, Iran and Iraq and some others gulf countries do not have atom bomb and advance technology for their nation safety, now these countries are under attack by the developed countries.

In conclusion, the lack of interest in science subjects due to poor teaching facilities and unequipped laboratories can have serious consequences for society. As a result, countries may fail to produce competent scientists, develop advanced technologies and compete with developed nations. Therefore, governments should improve science education and provide modern laboratory facilities to encourage more students to pursue science degrees.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

You address both causes and effects, and your main position is clear: weak teaching and laboratory facilities discourage students, while a shortage of scientists can hinder technological and economic development. The personal example about choosing ecommerce because of the condition of the laboratory makes one cause concrete. However, the effects are less fully explained than the causes. The claim that countries without enough scientists may face economic decline is relevant, but the example about Iran and Iraq lacking an atomic bomb and being attacked does not clearly establish how low university science enrolment leads to this outcome. Develop the chain of cause and effect more carefully and use examples that directly support it. The conclusion also introduces a recommendation, which could be supported more fully in the main discussion.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The response has a clear overall structure: an introduction, a paragraph on causes, one on effects, and a conclusion. Linking phrases such as “First and foremost,” “In addition to this,” and “In conclusion” help signal the stages of the argument. However, some connections between ideas are abrupt or unclear. For example, the move from a shortage of scientists to the claim that Gulf countries are under attack needs a more explicit explanation. The first body paragraph also combines students finding science difficult with inadequate laboratories, without clearly separating or developing these points. Use topic sentences that identify each paragraph’s focus, and make references such as “these causes” and “these countries” more precise so the reader can follow the argument without having to infer links.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use a relevant range of topic vocabulary, including “laboratories,” “scientists,” “technology,” “economy,” and “experiments,” and some phrases communicate the central ideas effectively. There are also attempts at more specific language, such as “competent scientists” and “advanced technologies.” However, inaccurate word choice and collocation sometimes make the writing sound unnatural: “less amount of students,” “poor faculty,” “technology development race,” and “do effect any country's economy” are examples. “Rotten and expired sea animals” is vivid but informal and imprecise for an academic essay. Aim for natural academic combinations and check word forms and spelling, including “ecommerce” and “atom bomb.” More precise vocabulary would make your explanations clearer and more convincing.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt both simple and complex sentence forms, including clauses introduced by “because,” “when,” and “as a result,” and the overall meaning is generally understandable. Some grammatical errors remain, particularly with subject–verb agreement, articles, and sentence boundaries. For example, “a country have” should be “a country has,” and “There are significant gap” needs a plural noun. In “If any nation has not sufficient scientists … than it can lead,” the conditional structure is faulty and the subject of “can lead” is unclear. Capitalisation after commas is also inconsistent, as in “First and foremost, Many.” Practise building accurate conditional sentences and checking agreement and punctuation. Greater control of these patterns would make your complex ideas easier to read.
