IELTS Writing Task 2 question

In many countries not enough students are choosing to study science at university. What are the causes of this? What effects does it have on society?

Give reasons for your answer and include relevant examples from your knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 5.5)

In universities, most of the students are not choosing the science subjects. The primary reasons behind this choice are limited opportunities availible after graduation as compare to the art and other fields. There are many consequences due to this behaviour for example we have limited knowledge in the science field. Moreover, fewer researcher are doing work so the new discoveries are nearly to zero.

There are mutiples reasons behind why people are not choosing science subject. Firstly people want to achieve short term goals which is possible with arts and business related subjects so they are not choosing with science subjects. Secondly, science subject are very hard to understand and their learning process are very time consuming so most of the people avoid this subject and go with easy subjects like arts and social subjects. Third and most important reason is the low paying salary as science related jobs are very low paying jobs which is the biggest reasons for not choosing.

If everyone will go with arts and business and not choosing the science subjects than at the end of the day there will be very little growth in the science subjects. Benefits which are received from this subjects like latest technolgies, health devices and other fields related benefits will not be received to the society. Another effect is that the research will be outdated.

In conclusion, people are not choosing the science subjects due to the limited benefits and its difficulty. Which resultantly causing the outdated research and limited growth in the science subjects.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

You address both parts of the question: you suggest causes, including the perceived difficulty of science, preference for shorter-term goals, and low salaries, then describe effects such as slower scientific growth and fewer benefits from technology and health devices. These are relevant ideas, and your position is clear. However, some points are asserted rather than explained. For example, the claim that science jobs are “very low paying” would be stronger with a specific comparison or example, and the effect of “outdated research” needs a clearer explanation of how fewer students lead to this outcome. Develop the causes and societal consequences with more precise support and show how they connect.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The response has a coherent overall arrangement: an introduction, a paragraph on causes, one on effects, and a conclusion. Sequencing words such as “Firstly,” “Secondly,” and “Another effect” help readers follow the main points. However, the progression is sometimes mechanical, and some links between ideas are unclear. The opening mentions limited opportunities after graduation, but this point is not developed in the causes paragraph, where low pay is introduced instead. The conclusion also repeats the main ideas without adding a clear synthesis. Use more precise referencing and transitions, and ensure each paragraph develops the points introduced earlier.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

You use enough topic-related vocabulary to communicate the main ideas, including “science subjects,” “research,” “discoveries,” and “health devices.” However, the range is limited and several word-choice, collocation, and spelling errors make the writing less natural. Examples include “availible,” “mutiples,” “latest technolgies,” and “fewer researcher.” Phrases such as “go with easy subjects” and “the research will be outdated” are understandable but imprecise for an academic discussion. Build a wider set of accurate expressions for causes and social impacts, and check spelling and word forms carefully. More precise vocabulary would make your claims clearer and more convincing.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

You attempt both simple and complex sentences, including conditional structures such as “If everyone will go with arts and business…” and a reason clause beginning “as science related jobs…”. However, control is uneven, and errors in agreement, verb forms, articles, and sentence boundaries recur. For example, “science subject are” should use a plural subject with matching agreement, while “Which resultantly causing…” is a sentence fragment and has an incorrect verb construction. The opening also contains a comparison structure that is not grammatically complete. Practise forming accurate conditional sentences and checking subject–verb agreement, then review punctuation so dependent clauses are joined to complete sentences.
