IELTS Writing Task 2 question
In many countries not enough students are choosing to study science at university. What are the causes of this? What effects does it have on society?
Give reasons for your answer and include relevant examples from your knowledge or experience.
Student answer (Band 5.5)
In recent years, choosen other subjects rather than science by students. They pursue other majors more than science. It has become a considerable discussion on many countries. This eassy will examine the principal effects that impact on society before concluding.
The most important reason is that why students are choosing other subjects instead of science because of its high cost. While in universities science courses have cost higher, other subjects are bare minimum. Students choose the low costs for their education. Additionally, another reason is that science is harder subject than any other majors. They want to complete their study lives without any hastle.
When it comes on the effects, it is clear that nations may have face difficulties in future. Because science is one of the importand subjects for students. A student who take science as a major, has the chance to be a doctor, an engeenior, a pilot or a scientist. Consequently, these positions have the impactfull role in every country. While learners moving to another subjects, in future it would be a great problem for eveyone. For example, a country may have few doctors or nurses more than a country need. As a result, everyone has to face difficulties, such as less health care and do not get enough treatment.
In conclusion, I must say that choosing a subject as a major is not a personal benefit. Choosing a subject wisely would help the whole nation. So it is very clear that not choosing a important subject is one of the biggest mistakes for all the students.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5
You address both parts of the question: you identify high course costs and the perceived difficulty of science as causes, then explain that shortages of professionals could affect society. The example of too few doctors and nurses makes the social consequence more concrete. However, the causes are only briefly explained, and the claim that science courses cost more is not supported with an example or further reasoning. The effects section focuses mainly on healthcare, while the broader consequences for society are not explored. The conclusion also shifts to advising students to choose wisely rather than clearly summarising the causes and effects. Develop each main idea with a clearer explanation and relevant support, and keep the conclusion focused on the question.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5
The response has a recognisable structure, with an introduction, separate paragraphs for causes and effects, and a conclusion. This helps readers identify the main sections. However, progression within paragraphs is limited, and some links are mechanical or unclear. For example, “When it comes on the effects” is an awkward transition, while “While learners moving to another subjects” does not clearly connect the shortage of science students to the predicted problem. The introduction promises to discuss effects before concluding, but does not clearly preview both causes and effects. Use straightforward topic sentences, connect each explanation to the point before it, and avoid starting sentences with “Because” when the resulting fragment is not joined to a main clause.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
You use some relevant topic vocabulary, including “science courses,” “major,” “scientist,” and “health care,” so the reader can follow the general subject. However, the range is limited and several inaccurate word choices or collocations make parts difficult to understand. Examples include “bare minimum” for low tuition, “study lives,” and “impactfull role”; spelling errors such as “eassy,” “importand,” and “engeenior” also reduce accuracy. Some phrases are repeated, particularly “other subjects” and “students.” Build a more precise set of expressions for costs, academic difficulty, and workforce shortages, and check spelling and word forms carefully. More accurate collocations would make your ideas clearer and more natural.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
You attempt both simple and more complex sentences, including a conditional idea in “A country may have few doctors or nurses…” and a contrast introduced with “While.” However, the range is limited, and errors occur frequently, sometimes making relationships between ideas unclear. For example, “In recent years, choosen other subjects rather than science by students” is not a complete, correctly formed sentence; “science is harder subject” is missing an article; and “a student who take science” has incorrect subject–verb agreement. The sentence beginning “Because science is one…” is also a fragment, and “nations may have face difficulties” uses an incorrect verb form. Practise complete clauses, articles, agreement, and verb patterns, then proofread each sentence for a clear subject and main verb.
