IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The plans below show the site of an airport now and how it will look after redevelopment next year.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
SOUTHWEST AIRPORT
Student answer (Band 7.0)
The diagram illustrates the expansion blueprint of southwest airport for the next year.
Overall, the previous area of the airport would be increased and the empty spaces would be appropriately arranged to acomodate shops and more arrival and departure areas.
At present, the airport has only one departure as well as arrival areas. No facility for hiring car, neither ATM's for urgent cash withdrawal nor bag drop areas. Only accessible pathway for gates is through walkway.
Regarding after development, the airport would have more departure as well as arrival areas, a car hiring services & ATM's at right corner of the arrival area, the check-in area and cafe would be resituated to right of security pass-port control area and other left of departure area respectively.
The walkways are replaced by the sky train for vertical transport. The path of gates is rebuild into Y-shaped area to accmodate more gates, while previously empty space below the walkway is adjusted for shops.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5
The response successfully identifies the main features of the airport redevelopment, including the expansion of arrival/departure areas, the introduction of new facilities like ATMs and car hire, and the structural changes to the gates and transport. The overview provides a clear summary of the transformation. However, the report could be improved by providing more precise comparisons between the 'before' and 'after' states. For instance, while you mention the addition of shops, quantifying or describing the scale of these changes more explicitly would strengthen the response. Overall, you have covered all parts of the task well and provided a clear, logical summary of the visual data.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5
The response is logically organized, moving from an introduction and overview to specific details about the current and future layouts. Paragraphing is used effectively to separate the current state from the proposed changes. Cohesive devices such as 'Regarding after development' and 'while previously' help guide the reader through the comparison. However, some transitions are slightly mechanical, and the flow between sentences could be smoother. For example, the transition between the current facilities and the future developments could be more fluid. Overall, the information is presented in a clear, coherent manner that is easy to follow.
Lexical Resource — Band 7.0
You demonstrate a sufficient range of vocabulary to describe the changes, using terms like 'expansion blueprint', 'resituated', and 'vertical transport'. There are some minor spelling errors, such as 'acomodate' and 'accmodate', and some awkward phrasing like 'only accessible pathway for gates is through walkway'. While these do not impede communication, they prevent the response from reaching a higher band. To improve, focus on more precise collocations and ensure consistent spelling. The use of 'Y-shaped' is a good example of specific, descriptive language that adds clarity to your report.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5
The response uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical slips, such as 'No facility for hiring car, neither ATM's' (which lacks a main verb and uses incorrect punctuation) and 'the airport would have more departure as well as arrival areas'. Additionally, there are minor issues with article usage and pluralization (e.g., 'ATM's' should be 'ATMs'). While these errors are noticeable, they do not significantly hinder the reader's understanding of the information. To reach a higher band, aim for more error-free sentences and greater control over complex grammatical structures.
