Student answer (Band 7.0)

The picture illustrates the current layout of an airport site now and after redevelopment in coming year.

Overall, the development plan seems to increase the covered area and facilities inside and around the airport.

The current plan has two main areas one for departures and other for arrivals with only one main entrance. There is a check in counter in departure side with only one cafe in the far side of hall. The new development will have two entrances in each section, relocation of cafe and check-in counter. Alongside the cafe there will be a bag drop area right opposite to the check-in. There will be addition of facilities like cafe, car hire and ATM in the arrivals side.

Security and Passport controls remain unchanged. Previously there were no shops, but in future there will be some between the passage from departures to the boarding side. A major construction is expected in future with an increase in number of gates from 8 to 18. Moreover, currently there is a walkway in between the two areas which will have then sky train.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5

The response covers the main features of the airport redevelopment well. You successfully identified the key changes, such as the increase in gates, the addition of the sky train, and the new facilities. However, the report could be improved by grouping the information more logically—perhaps by separating 'infrastructure' from 'passenger facilities'—to better highlight the comparisons. While you mentioned the increase in gates from 8 to 18, providing a more detailed overview of the spatial changes would have strengthened the analysis. Overall, you have addressed the requirements of the task effectively, providing a clear summary of the transition from the current layout to the future plan.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The essay is logically organized, moving from a general overview to specific details about the airport layout. You use some cohesive devices, such as 'Moreover' and 'Previously', to link ideas. However, the paragraphing is quite limited; the entire body of the report is contained in one large paragraph. Breaking this into two distinct paragraphs—for example, one for structural changes and one for passenger facilities—would improve the flow and readability. Additionally, some transitions feel a bit mechanical. Using a wider variety of linking words and ensuring each paragraph has a clear topic sentence would help elevate the coherence of your writing.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

You have a sufficient range of vocabulary to describe the changes, using terms like 'redevelopment', 'relocation', and 'construction'. However, there are some minor issues with word choice and collocation. For instance, 'in departure side' should be 'on the departure side', and 'addition of facilities' could be more naturally expressed as 'the introduction of new facilities'. While the vocabulary is adequate for the task, it lacks the precision and variety required for a higher band. To improve, try to incorporate more sophisticated synonyms and ensure that prepositions and articles are used accurately with your chosen nouns.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

The response contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is generally clear, there are several grammatical errors, particularly regarding articles ('the departure side', 'the arrivals side') and pluralization. For example, 'two main areas one for departures and other for arrivals' is missing necessary articles and punctuation. Additionally, some phrasing is slightly awkward, such as 'in coming year' (should be 'in the coming year'). While these errors do not impede communication, they occur frequently enough to prevent a higher score. Focusing on subject-verb agreement and the correct use of definite/indefinite articles will significantly improve your accuracy.
