IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The plans below show the site of an airport now and how it will look after redevelopment next year.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
SOUTHWEST AIRPORT
Student answer (Band 6.5)
The two plans compare the site of an airport that how it currently looks and how it will look after redevelopment the following year.
Overall, it can be seen that extra facilities will be going to be added for the passengers. In contrast, a part of banking facilities will be included in an airport in terms of ATMs. A cafeteria included in both areas will allow the passengers to relax during connected flights. The overall plan of an airport has been upgraded through adding many gates.
Now, looking at the current plan, an airport consists of only eight gates, while it have been increased to eighteen gates to control more number of flights at the same time, forming a Y-shaped pattern. Coming to the area of departure, currently only a café is available, which will include the bag drop portion so that passengers can safeguard their luggage.
On the other hand, the arrival area currently does not include any facilities, but next year it will include cab facilities, café shops, and money deposit and withdrawal facilities in the form of ATMs. Once the security control is passed, it does not contain any shops, which will be included in following years. Nevertheless, currently only one gate is used for arrival and another for departure, which will be increase to two, respectively

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5
The response covers the main features of the airport plans, including the expansion of gates and the addition of new facilities. However, the description is occasionally inaccurate or confusing. For example, the claim that 'a part of banking facilities will be included in an airport in terms of ATMs' is slightly awkward, and the description of the arrival/departure gates is unclear. While the main trends are identified, the comparison between the current and future states could be more precise. The overview is present but lacks a clear summary of the most significant changes, such as the overall expansion of the terminal layout. To improve, focus on clearly grouping information by area (e.g., landside vs. airside) to provide a more logical report.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5
The response is organized into paragraphs, which helps the reader follow the progression of ideas. There is a clear attempt to use cohesive devices such as 'In contrast,' 'On the other hand,' and 'Nevertheless.' However, some of these transitions are used mechanically or slightly inappropriately, such as 'Nevertheless' when introducing a new point rather than a contrast. Additionally, the referencing is sometimes unclear, particularly when discussing the gates and the arrival/departure areas. The flow between sentences is generally logical, but the internal structure of the paragraphs could be tightened to ensure that the comparison between the 'now' and 'next year' plans is more seamless and less repetitive.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.5
The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task, allowing the student to describe the changes to the airport facilities. There are some attempts to use topic-specific vocabulary like 'redevelopment,' 'facilities,' and 'luggage.' However, there are instances of imprecise word choice and awkward phrasing, such as 'control more number of flights' instead of 'accommodate a greater number of flights' and 'bag drop portion' instead of 'bag drop area.' The range is sufficient to convey the main points, but it lacks the sophistication and precision required for higher band scores. Improving collocation and using more precise terminology for airport infrastructure would enhance the quality of the writing.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
The student uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors throughout the text, such as 'it have been increased' (subject-verb agreement), 'will be going to be added' (redundant verb construction), and 'will be increase' (incorrect verb form). While these errors are noticeable, they do not generally impede the reader's understanding of the information provided. The punctuation is mostly functional, but there are some issues with sentence construction that affect the overall fluency. To reach a higher band, the student should focus on consistent subject-verb agreement and avoiding redundant or overly complex verb phrases.
