Student answer (Band 6.5)

The plans describe the site of an airport now and how it will look after redevelopment next year.

The plan of a Southwest Airport, between now and after development has multiple changes for instance increase in gates, changes in placement of stores and adding several new shops.

The current and after plan of airport has 2 gates departure and arrivals at same place itself. In right now plan inside the arrivals there are no stores or shops where as after development there will be new cafe, an ATM and car hire facilities available. Same way in departure there are only check-in counter and cafe is there but in redevelopment plan there will be added new counter called bag drop. After that the place of security, passport control and customs will be same. In redevelopment plan there will be shops in departures. At last there will be increase in gates from 1-18 in redevelopment and there will be facility of escalators instead of stairs and divided into 2 section.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

The response covers the main features of the airport redevelopment, such as the increase in gates and the addition of new facilities like the ATM and bag drop. However, the description is somewhat mechanical and lacks a clear overview or summary of the most significant changes. While the key features are identified, the comparison between the 'now' and 'next year' plans could be more analytical. The mention of '1-18' gates is slightly confusing as the visual data shows a specific layout change rather than just a simple numerical increase. To improve, ensure you provide a clear introductory overview that highlights the most striking transformation, such as the expansion of the terminal and the addition of passenger amenities.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The essay is organised into paragraphs, which helps the reader follow the structure. However, the use of cohesive devices is somewhat repetitive and occasionally mechanical (e.g., 'Same way', 'At last'). The progression of ideas is logical, moving from the general layout to specific areas like arrivals and departures. To reach a higher band, you should use a wider variety of linking words and transition phrases to connect sentences more fluidly. Additionally, ensure that referencing (e.g., 'the plan', 'the place') is precise so that the reader is never in doubt about which part of the airport is being discussed.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task, allowing you to describe the airport features clearly. You use relevant terms like 'check-in counter', 'passport control', and 'car hire facilities'. However, the range is somewhat limited, and there are instances of awkward phrasing, such as 'In right now plan' and 'Same way in departure'. To improve, focus on using more precise collocations and academic vocabulary. Instead of repeating 'plan' or 'place', try using synonyms like 'layout', 'configuration', 'terminal', or 'facility'. Expanding your range of descriptive verbs and adjectives will help you achieve a more professional tone.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The response contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors, particularly with articles ('the plan of a Southwest Airport', 'in right now plan') and prepositions. Some sentences are slightly disjointed, which affects the overall flow. While the errors do not prevent the reader from understanding the main points, they are frequent enough to impact the fluency of the writing. To improve, focus on subject-verb agreement and the correct use of articles. Practising the construction of complex sentences using relative clauses or subordinating conjunctions will also help you demonstrate a wider grammatical range.
