IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The plans below show the site of an airport now and how it will look after redevelopment next year.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
SOUTHWEST AIRPORT
Student answer (Band 6.0)
This plan chart shows the structural planning of the Southwest Airport before and after one year of redevelopment. At a glance we can see that number of arrival and departure gates will be doubled after development.
Highlighting the current structure of the airport there is only one cafeteria and check point by the side of the departure section, but after redevelopment of the airport arrival section will also have it's own cafeteria and checkpoint. Section like Security, Passport Control, Customs will remain at the same place after re-development. There is a walkway for passengers and only 8 boarding gates in the recent structure of airport but after redevelopment there will be bus service for passengers and increased number of boarding gates.
In conclusion, after the redevelopment of The SOUTHWEST AIRPORT there will be more facilities for passengers like cafeteria, bus service and car parking which will make airport access easier.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0
The response covers the main features of the airport plans, such as the increase in gates and the addition of new facilities. However, the overview is somewhat limited, and the description of the changes is slightly disjointed. While you identify key developments like the cafeteria and bus service, the comparison between the 'now' and 'next year' states could be more precise. For instance, you mention the number of gates will be doubled, but you do not specify the exact numbers (8 to 18) shown in the diagram. To reach a higher band, ensure you provide a more comprehensive overview and integrate specific data points more effectively to support your descriptions.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0
The essay is organized into logical paragraphs, including an introduction, body, and conclusion. There is a clear progression of ideas, moving from the general overview to specific structural changes. However, the use of cohesive devices is somewhat mechanical and limited. Transitions between sentences could be smoother; for example, the shift from discussing the cafeteria to security features feels abrupt. Additionally, the referencing is occasionally unclear, such as in the phrase 'Section like Security', which lacks a proper determiner. Improving the variety of linking words and ensuring better flow between sentences would enhance the overall coherence of the response.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
The vocabulary used is adequate for the task, allowing you to convey the main points clearly. You use relevant terms such as 'redevelopment', 'structural planning', and 'boarding gates'. However, the range is somewhat limited, and there are minor errors in word choice and collocation, such as 'plan chart' (which is redundant) and 'Section like Security' (which should be 'Sections such as'). To improve, try to incorporate more precise vocabulary related to describing maps and changes, such as 'expanded', 'relocated', or 'transformed'. The current vocabulary is sufficient to communicate your meaning but lacks the flexibility and precision required for a higher band.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
You demonstrate a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is generally clear, there are several grammatical errors that occur throughout the text. For example, 'number of arrival and departure gates' is missing an article ('the number'), and 'it's own' incorrectly uses an apostrophe for a possessive pronoun ('its own'). Additionally, there are minor punctuation and article usage issues, such as 'Section like Security' and 'in the recent structure of airport'. While these errors do not impede communication, they are frequent enough to prevent a higher score. Focusing on subject-verb agreement and the correct use of articles will significantly improve your accuracy.
