Student answer (Band 6.0)

The given drafts illustrate the infrastructure of an airport before and a year after its redesigning. Overall, the southwest airport underwent significant changes after its remodification. Before its redevelopment, the southwest airport simply has an arrival entrance that lead passengers straight to passport control cutoms room, and a departure side entrance. While entering to the departure side, a cafe for passengers refreshment has been built on the rigt side of departure area. In addition to this, a check-in room has been built on the left side of departure's area with a security passport control office straight away in the direction of departure's entrance. Right after leaving the security passport control office, there comes a short passenger walkaway path. After its development, an ATM and a cafe has also been built in the arrivals section. Right after entering the arrivals rental cars' section has been introduced. On the other hand, a bag drop section has been built for passengers to put their luggage. Some new shops has been constructed right after security passport control room. Lastly, the passengers walkaway route has been extended after its redevelopment.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response covers the main features of the airport plans, identifying key changes such as the addition of shops, the bag drop, and the extension of the walkway. However, the description is somewhat disorganized. It struggles to clearly distinguish between the 'before' and 'after' states, often mixing them within the same sentences. For instance, describing the cafe and check-in room as being 'built' while discussing the 'before' state is confusing. To reach a higher band, you should structure the report by clearly contrasting the two timeframes, perhaps using one paragraph for the original layout and another for the redeveloped version, ensuring the comparison is explicit and easy to follow.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.5

The essay lacks a clear paragraph structure, which makes it difficult to follow the progression of information. While there are some attempts at cohesive devices like 'In addition to this' and 'On the other hand', the overall flow is hindered by the lack of logical grouping. The text is essentially one long paragraph, which is inappropriate for an academic report. To improve, you should use clear paragraph breaks to separate the introduction/overview from the detailed body paragraphs. Additionally, ensure that referencing is precise; currently, it is sometimes unclear which part of the airport is being referred to, which affects the overall coherence.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task, but it lacks the precision and variety expected at higher levels. You rely on repetitive phrasing such as 'has been built' and 'right after'. There are also some inaccuracies in word choice, such as 'cutoms room' (spelling) and 'refreshment' (should be 'refreshments'). To improve, try to use a wider range of verbs to describe changes, such as 'transformed', 'relocated', 'expanded', or 'introduced'. Using more specific terminology for airport facilities will also help demonstrate a more sophisticated command of the language.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The response contains a mix of simple and complex structures, but there are frequent errors in tense and subject-verb agreement. For example, 'the southwest airport simply has' (should be 'had') and 'Some new shops has been constructed' (should be 'have'). There are also issues with article usage and prepositions, such as 'in the direction of departure's entrance'. While these errors do not completely impede communication, they are frequent enough to lower the score. Focusing on consistent tense usage—specifically using the past tense for the original state and the present perfect or future for the changes—will significantly improve your accuracy.
