Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.0
The response addresses the task by describing the airport plans, but the coverage is inconsistent. While you identify some key features like the gates and new amenities, the description lacks precision. For instance, you mention '1 to 8 gates' but do not clearly explain the layout changes or the expansion of the terminal building. The overview is somewhat confusingly phrased, making it difficult to grasp the main trends immediately. To improve, ensure you clearly contrast the 'before' and 'after' states by grouping information logically rather than listing items. You should also aim to highlight the most significant changes, such as the expansion of the terminal and the addition of the sky train, more explicitly.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.0
The essay is organised into paragraphs, which is a positive step. However, the logical progression is frequently interrupted by awkward phrasing and unclear sentence structures. Cohesive devices are used, but they are often mechanical or misused, such as 'To begin with the former viewpoints' and 'Turning to the latter viewpoints', which are not appropriate for describing a map. Referencing is also problematic; for example, the phrase 'It would include' lacks a clear antecedent. To improve, focus on using transition words that naturally link ideas, such as 'In contrast', 'Furthermore', or 'Regarding the layout', and ensure that each paragraph has a clear, singular focus.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.0
The vocabulary is limited and often repetitive. There are several instances of word-choice errors that impede clarity, such as 'dentures' (likely meant 'departures') and 'side of an airport' (likely meant 'site'). Phrases like 'in present time' and 'in upcoming year' are grammatically awkward and lack the precision required for an Academic Task 1 response. While you attempt to use topic-specific vocabulary like 'amenities', 'refurbishment', and 'walkways', the overall range is narrow. To reach a higher band, focus on learning collocations related to describing maps and trends, and ensure you proofread for basic spelling and word-choice errors.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0
The response contains frequent grammatical errors that often make the meaning unclear. There are issues with article usage ('in a southwest airport'), verb tense consistency ('it will have seen'), and sentence fragments. Many sentences are poorly constructed, such as 'In present time there are a limited number of amenities and services likewise cafes walkways and 1to 8 gates are available.' The lack of control over basic sentence structure and punctuation significantly hinders communication. To improve, focus on mastering simple sentence structures before attempting more complex ones, and pay close attention to subject-verb agreement and the correct use of prepositions.
