IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The plans below show the site of an airport now and how it will look after redevelopment next year.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
SOUTHWEST AIRPORT
Student answer (Band 6.0)
The maps illustrate the information regarding the site of a southwest airport now and after redevelopment next year.
Overall, it is evident that an airport will undergo redevelopment during which some structures whether be removed, relocated or replaced, it will be converted to modernized and updated place.
Furthermore, it is clear that now, an airport contain check-in on the top left corner, cafe on the top right corner, walkway and 8 gates. After development, Check-in will be shifted to the mid right corner and its place will be replaced by bag drop area, the cafe will be shifted to the left lower corner, ATM and car hire will be added at arrivals, walkway will be replaced by the sky train and number of gates will be increased by covering more area.
In short, althought many changes will occur, the whole location will remain same and balanced with more modern facilities.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0
The response covers the main features of the airport plans, identifying key changes such as the relocation of the check-in and cafe, and the introduction of the sky train. However, the description is somewhat mechanical and lacks a more analytical approach to the spatial changes. While the main features are highlighted, the comparison could be more sophisticated by grouping related changes (e.g., passenger facilities vs. transport infrastructure). The overview is present but could be more detailed regarding the overall transformation of the airport's layout. It addresses the prompt adequately but lacks the depth required for a higher band.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0
The response is organized into a clear introduction, overview, and body paragraph. Cohesive devices are used, such as 'Furthermore' and 'In short', though the flow between sentences is occasionally repetitive. The paragraphing is logical, but the body paragraph is quite dense, making it slightly difficult to follow the sequence of changes. The use of referencing is generally clear, but the transition between the current state and the future state could be managed with more varied cohesive links to improve the overall progression of ideas.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
The vocabulary is adequate for the task, using terms like 'redevelopment', 'relocated', and 'modernized'. However, there are some inaccuracies and awkward phrasing, such as 'converted to modernized and updated place' and 'the whole location will remain same'. The range of vocabulary is somewhat limited and relies on basic descriptors. To improve, the student should aim for more precise collocations and a wider variety of verbs to describe spatial changes, such as 'extended', 'demolished', or 'integrated'.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5
The response contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors, such as 'some structures whether be removed' (incorrect modal usage) and 'an airport contain' (subject-verb agreement). Punctuation is generally functional, but the sentence structure is occasionally clunky. While the meaning is clear, the frequency of these errors prevents the response from reaching a higher band. More attention to subject-verb agreement and the correct use of passive voice for describing map changes would be beneficial.
