IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The plans below show the site of an airport now and how it will look after redevelopment next year.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
SOUTHWEST AIRPORT
Student answer (Band 5.0)
The plan depicted in the diagram presents two plans of an airport; one is it's current condition and another one how it will look after development work.
The main feature that is salient is the number of new gates which have been introduced in the after development plan whereas in the current plan is only eight one of them; which is not sufficient.
one of the helpful features will be in the upcoming airport is the addition of an ATM booth. People in the airport will be able to withdraw currency when needed will give them a benefit which now lack in the current and existing one.
The other features worth talking about is Sky train and bag drop. Sky train
makes passengers and flyers to move directly from airport to their desired destination. whereas Bag drop is necessary if you have a lot of luggage's but you don't wanna carry them while moving inside or outside the airport.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.0
The response identifies some key features, such as the new gates, ATM, and sky train. However, it fails to provide a clear overview or summary of the main trends as required by the task. The description is somewhat fragmented, focusing on individual items rather than comparing the overall layout changes effectively. The analysis of the 'current' versus 'future' state is limited, and the inclusion of personal commentary (e.g., 'which is not sufficient') is inappropriate for an Academic Task 1 report, which should remain objective and descriptive. To improve, ensure you provide a clear introductory overview and focus on reporting the visual data objectively without adding personal opinions.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.0
The response is organised into paragraphs, but the flow between ideas is often mechanical. The use of cohesive devices is limited and sometimes awkward, such as the transition 'The other features worth talking about is...'. Referencing is occasionally unclear, and the logical progression between the current state and the future redevelopment is not fully established. While the paragraphing is present, the internal structure of the paragraphs lacks the sophistication required for higher bands. Improving the use of linking words and ensuring that each paragraph has a clear thematic focus would enhance the overall coherence of the report.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.0
The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task but lacks the precision and variety expected at higher levels. There are some inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, such as 'flyers to move directly' (passengers to travel) and 'luggage's' (luggage is an uncountable noun). The phrasing is often simplistic, relying on basic descriptors. To reach a higher band, you should aim to use more precise terminology related to maps and diagrams, such as 'expanded,' 'relocated,' 'integrated,' or 'upgraded,' and ensure that you use nouns and verbs in their correct forms.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0
The response contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but there are frequent grammatical errors that occasionally impede clarity. Examples include 'one of the helpful features will be in the upcoming airport' (missing 'which'), 'it's current condition' (incorrect use of apostrophe for possessive 'its'), and 'which now lack in the current' (missing subject). Punctuation is also inconsistent, particularly with the use of semicolons and commas. To improve, focus on mastering basic subject-verb agreement, correct use of possessives, and ensuring that complex sentences are constructed with accurate relative clauses and prepositions.
