IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The plans below show the site of an airport now and how it will look after redevelopment next year.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
SOUTHWEST AIRPORT
Student answer (Band 6.0)
The plan shows the changes that will appear in south west airport in the coming year.
Overall, there will be tremendous changes at the southwest airport. At present, the airport has limited facilities and in the coming years the redevelopment has brought in significant changes in the overall structure with extension at the top and car hire on the south-east side.
Presently, the Southwest airport has 8 gates at the North side with departures and arrivals at the South. There are four major points the gates and walkways at the top passing through the security, passport control and customs in the center followed with check-in and a cafe for refreshments.
After development the plan would have 18 gates with the sky train connection between the two. The change that are noticeable is the cafe is now moved to the east side and the check-in the center. The bag drop will be a new facility added to the replace of the original check-in. The arrivals & departures gates will have 2 extension. There will be 2 arrivals & departures & arrival with an extended area of car park to the right side of the arrivals. An ATM is also an added facility that is between the cafe and car hire.
In conclusion - The plan after redevelopment shows drastic changes with new facilities that will be added in the next year giving travelers enough time to relax before their flight.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0
The response covers the main features of the airport redevelopment, including the increase in gates, the addition of a sky train, and the relocation of facilities. However, the description of the 'before' and 'after' states is occasionally confusing. For instance, the mention of '18 gates with the sky train connection between the two' is somewhat vague regarding the layout. While the main features are identified, the comparison could be more analytical. The summary of the changes is clear, but the report lacks a cohesive overview of the spatial transformation, which is essential for a high band score in Task 1.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0
The essay is organized into logical paragraphs, including an introduction, overview, and body paragraphs. However, the use of cohesive devices is somewhat mechanical. Phrases like 'The change that are noticeable' and 'In conclusion -' are a bit simplistic. The progression of ideas within paragraphs is generally clear, but the transition between the description of the current state and the future state could be smoother. The referencing is sometimes imprecise, making it difficult for the reader to follow the exact spatial changes described in the plan.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task, using terms like 'redevelopment', 'facilities', and 'extension'. However, there are some inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, such as 'added to the replace of' and 'The change that are noticeable'. The range of vocabulary is somewhat limited and repetitive. To reach a higher band, you should aim to use more precise terminology for describing spatial changes, such as 'relocated', 'transformed', 'expanded', or 'integrated', rather than relying on basic verbs like 'moved' or 'added'.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5
The response uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. However, there are several grammatical errors that persist throughout the text. Examples include 'The change that are noticeable' (subject-verb agreement), 'the redevelopment has brought in significant changes' (tense inconsistency when discussing future plans), and 'There will be 2 arrivals & departures & arrival' (repetitive and confusing phrasing). While these errors do not completely impede communication, they occur frequently enough to prevent a higher score. More attention to subject-verb agreement and consistent tense usage is required.
