Student answer (Band 6.0)

The given diagrams illustrate the plan of Southwest airport and its projection after redevelopment next year.

Overall, airport would be extended with inclusion of new amenities like car hire facility, increase number of gates and terminals , ATM machine and bag drop service. Walkway would be replaced by sky train.

Presently, Southwest airport has a basic plan consisting of a departure and an arrival terminal. A cafe and a check-in counter. Security and passport control is available for people departing for travel. There are eight gates approachable through a walkway. People arriving at airport have to pass through passport control and custom before exit.

The projection plan for next year presents an extended airport with increase number of terminals both for departure and arrival. Check-in services would be relocated in place of cafe. A bag drop facility would be added to the facility, cafe would be relocated to the left side of entrance. There would be shops after passing security and passport control. Gates would be approachable by a sky train for passengers. A cafe and ATM would be available for visitors arriving at airport after passing through passport control and customs. Car hire services would be available before arrival gate for visitors.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response covers all key features of the airport redevelopment, including the relocation of services and the addition of new amenities. You have successfully identified the main changes, such as the transition from a walkway to a sky train and the expansion of terminal facilities. However, the report could be improved by grouping the information more analytically rather than simply listing changes in the order they appear on the map. To reach a higher band, ensure that comparisons between the 'now' and 'future' states are more explicit, perhaps by highlighting the overall shift in passenger flow or the increased capacity of the airport.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The essay is logically organized into an introduction, an overview, and two body paragraphs. The progression of ideas is generally clear, moving from the current state to the future projections. However, the use of cohesive devices is somewhat mechanical and limited. For instance, the transition between sentences could be smoother; you rely heavily on simple subject-verb structures. Using a wider variety of linking words (e.g., 'consequently', 'furthermore', 'in contrast to') would help improve the flow and demonstrate a more sophisticated control of paragraph structure.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'redevelopment', 'amenities', 'projection', and 'relocated'. However, there are some inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, such as 'increase number of gates' (should be 'an increased number of gates') and 'custom' (should be 'customs'). The vocabulary is functional but lacks the precision and variety required for a higher band. To improve, try to incorporate more descriptive language regarding spatial relationships and changes in scale or layout.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The response contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is generally clear, there are several grammatical errors, particularly with articles ('the' airport, 'a' sky train) and pluralization ('increase number of terminals'). Some sentences are slightly awkward, such as 'Walkway would be replaced by sky train', which lacks necessary articles. While these errors do not impede communication, they occur frequently enough to prevent a higher score. Focusing on subject-verb agreement and the correct use of articles will significantly enhance the accuracy of your writing.
