IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The plans below show the site of an airport now and how it will look after redevelopment next year.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
SOUTHWEST AIRPORT
Student answer (Band 6.0)
The provided diagram illustrates an architectural design for an airport representing its current map and how it will look after its refurbishment next year.
Overall, the southwest airport will be significantly upgraded in terms of area and other important facilities for passengers.
Currently, the southwest airport has only 8 entrance gates, two walking ways, one check-in for boarding, a cafe and one departures and arrivals gate.
Next year, after the new upgradations, the southwest airport will witness 18 entry gates which reduces the crowd at entry points, and walkways will be converted into sky train so the air travelers can easily move in and move out. Previously, there was not a single shop in the airport, but next year there will be a few shops inside the airport. The security, passport control and customs offices will remain same; however, the number of cafes will be increased to two. One major change is the increase in departure and arrivals gate, and it will be 2 after development. New changes in airport will experience an ATM and voyagers will easily withdraw the cash, a bag drop for air passengers, and a car hire as well, so the travelers can easily take cabs inside the airport.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0
You have successfully identified the main features of the airport plans and provided a clear overview of the proposed changes. You covered the key developments, such as the increase in gates, the introduction of the sky train, and the addition of new amenities like shops and an ATM. However, the response could be improved by grouping information more logically rather than listing changes in a somewhat disjointed manner. Additionally, ensure that you accurately interpret the visual data; for instance, you mentioned that security and passport control remain the same, but the diagram shows them being relocated or reconfigured. Overall, you have addressed the task requirements well.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0
The response is organized into a logical structure with an introduction, an overview, and body paragraphs. You use some cohesive devices, such as 'Previously' and 'however', to signal transitions between ideas. However, the flow between sentences is sometimes mechanical, and the paragraphing could be more effectively utilized to separate the 'current' state from the 'future' state more distinctly. The use of referencing is generally clear, but some transitions feel a bit abrupt. Improving the variety of linking words would help the text flow more naturally and elevate the coherence of your writing.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.5
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary to describe the changes, such as 'refurbishment', 'upgraded', and 'amenities'. However, there are some instances of awkward word choice and non-standard collocations, such as 'new upgradations' (which is not a standard English word) and 'sky train' (which should be 'skytrain'). You also use 'voyagers' to refer to airport passengers, which is slightly unnatural in this context. To reach a higher band, focus on using more precise terminology for describing maps and architectural changes, and ensure that your word choices are natural and appropriate for a formal report.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, which is appropriate for this task. There are some grammatical errors, such as 'will remain same' (should be 'will remain the same') and 'New changes in airport will experience an ATM' (which is semantically incorrect; the airport will 'feature' or 'include' an ATM). While these errors do not significantly impede communication, they are frequent enough to prevent a higher score. You should focus on subject-verb agreement and the correct use of articles to improve the accuracy of your sentences.
