Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.0
The student attempts to address the task by describing the main features of the airport before and after redevelopment, such as the increase in gates from 8 to 18, the addition of a sky train, and new facilities like bag drop and car hire. However, the response suffers from significant weaknesses in reporting visual data. Rather than maintaining an objective, academic tone, the student relies on subjective and irrelevant commentary, such as stating that the airport 'looks very old' and 'is not interested' (sic). Furthermore, important spatial relationships and specific locations of new features are poorly articulated. The overview lacks clarity and fails to synthesise the overarching structural transformation clearly. Consequently, the task achievement is limited, aligning closely with Band 4.5 to 5.0.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.0
The text is organised into short, rudimentary paragraphs, attempting to separate the 'now' and 'after' features. However, the progression of ideas is frequently disrupted by repetitive phrasing ('After a year redevelopment') and a lack of smooth transitions. Cohesive devices are minimal, repetitive, and often misused, such as the abrupt transition 'so the looks of airport is able to see'. Referencing is also weak, with pronouns lacking clear antecedents. While there is a basic structure separating the two time periods, the mechanical cohesion and lack of logical flow place this response firmly in the Band 5 category.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.0
The lexical range is extremely limited and repetitive throughout the response. The student frequently repeats basic vocabulary such as 'airport', 'redevelopment', and 'cafe', alongside severe word-choice errors like 'not interested' instead of 'uninteresting' or 'outdated'. Attempts to use less common vocabulary result in unnatural phrasing and collocation errors, such as 'ATM is managed' or 'car hire in the airport'. Spelling and word formation are problematic ('expended' used instead of 'expanded' or 'extended'). Because the vocabulary restricts clear communication and relies heavily on basic, repetitive terms, it meets the criteria for Band 4.5, rounded to 5.0.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 4.5
The grammatical range is very limited, consisting predominantly of simple sentences and faulty attempts at complex structures. There are persistent, basic grammatical errors throughout the text, including subject-verb agreement issues ('their are eight gates', 'There are many changes are took place'), tense confusion ('who it will look', 'is took place'), and missing articles or prepositions. Punctuation is basic and erratic. These frequent errors cause considerable strain for the reader and significantly impede the delivery of meaning, reflecting a performance characteristic of Band 4.0 to 4.5.
