map ielts writing task 1

Student answer (Band 6.0)

The plans illustrates an airport site on how it looks today and after redevelopment next year.

Overall it has been expanded after redevelopment with more gates and facilities for the people. Today it has 8 gates which would be increased to 18, an additional cafe, two sky trains, a bag drop, an ATM machine, and a car hire.

On entering the airport site there would be two sky trains and shops on the departure side, The plan consists of two parts depatures and arrivals. A cafe, check in and a bag drop is situated on the departure side wheread an ATM machine, car hire and another cafe is on arrivals side.

The structure of gates in today map looks like a squarre shape with 8 gates whereas after redevelopment it has a Y-shape with more gates added. Today it has walkway to travel inside the airport but after redevelopment skytrain can take you to the airport so you would not have to walk long distances.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0

The response successfully addresses all parts of the task by covering both the current layout of Southwest Airport and the proposed redevelopment plans for next year. You have identified and reported the main features and made relevant comparisons, such as the increase in gates from 8 to 18 and the addition of new facilities like shops, a bag drop, and a sky train. The overview provided in the second paragraph gives a clear summary of the overall changes. While some details could be slightly more extended, the response fully satisfies the requirements for this band by presenting a clear picture of the visual data provided.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5

Your writing shows a basic overall structure, divided into an introduction, overview, and body paragraphs discussing features. However, the logical progression is occasionally hindered by abrupt transitions and mechanical cohesive devices. For example, the sentence 'On entering the airport site there would be two sky trains and shops on the departure side' groups disparate elements together rather than following a smooth spatial or thematic flow. Paragraphing is attempted, but sentences within paragraphs sometimes lack tight cohesive ties, leading to a somewhat disjointed feel. Improving how ideas link from sentence to sentence will enhance overall readability.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use an adequate range of vocabulary suitable for describing maps, such as 'redevelopment', 'facilities', 'concourse', and 'extensions'. There are several vocabulary and spelling errors, such as 'depatures', 'wheread', and 'squarre', alongside awkward lexical choices like 'an ATM machine, car hire and another cafe is on arrivals side' where subject-verb agreement or phrasing could be more precise. You attempt some less common terms like 'squarre shape' and 'walkway', but inaccuracies in spelling and word choice occasionally distract from the precision of your descriptions.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

The text displays a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, such as 'Today it has 8 gates which would be increased to 18...'. However, you make several grammatical errors involving tense consistency (mixing present facts with future conditional 'would be'), articles, and prepositions, such as 'The plans illustrates' (subject-verb agreement), 'in today map' (preposition use), and 'skytrain can take you to the airport' (missing article). Punctuation is also inconsistent, with missing commas in compound structures and introductory clauses. These errors occasionally cause minor bumps for the reader, fitting a developing control of grammar.
