Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0
The response only partially addresses the task requirements. Furthermore, the length requirement is not met, as the text falls short of the 150-word minimum, containing only 140 words. While the student attempts to summarise the main changes between the current and future layouts of Southwest Airport, the information is limited and under-developed. Important features like the expansion of gates from 1 to 18 and the addition of the sky train are mentioned, but key details lack clarity and precision. The overview is overly simplistic, and some descriptions of spatial shifts are inaccurate or vague, such as stating that check-in shifted to the opposite side.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0
There is some organisation in the response, but it lacks a clear overall progression. The essay is divided into a brief introduction, an overview, and body sentences, but the sequencing of ideas feels disjointed and relies heavily on isolated bullet-point-like statements rather than flowing paragraphs. Cohesive devices are either inadequate or inaccurate, resulting in mechanical transitions between sentences. For instance, phrases like 'One year before' and 'After development' are used repetitively without creating smooth logical links. Paragraphing is also poorly managed, as the body section is fragmented into very short, disconnected sentences that impede the overall readability of the report.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
The vocabulary used is limited and barely adequate for the task. The student attempts some less common vocabulary related to the topic, such as 'redevelopment', 'gateway', and 'concurse' (implied), but this is accompanied by noticeable errors in word choice, word form, and spelling, such as 'occured', 'contructing', 'siuated', and 'shift' instead of 'shifted'. These lexical errors and repetitive phrasing mean the range lacks flexibility and precision. While the meaning can generally be discerned, the frequent lexical slips cause some difficulty for the reader and prevent the response from achieving a higher band.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
The grammar demonstrates a very limited range of structures, relying mostly on simple sentences with frequent errors when attempting more complex patterns. There are recurring issues with verb tense consistency, subject-verb agreement, and missing articles, such as 'The figure illustrate', 'many features added', and 'adding a ATM service'. Prepositional usage and word forms within grammatical patterns are also frequently faulty, seen in phrases like 'after redevelopment over one year' and 'in the airport'. These frequent grammatical errors can cause difficulty and strain for the reader throughout the response.
