Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

The response successfully addresses all parts of the task by identifying the main features and making relevant comparisons between the current and future layouts of Southwest Airport. The overview correctly notes the expansion in overall size, increased gate capacity, and added passenger amenities. Key changes such as the extension to 18 gates, the addition of the sky train, and new commercial facilities are highlighted. However, some ideas are slightly under-developed or imprecise; for instance, the description of arrival and departure gates does not fully align with the visual data regarding concourse gates versus terminal access points, demonstrating a tendency to generalise some features rather than reporting them with complete precision. This balance of covering all areas adequately with minor limitations places the performance securely at this level.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The response presents a coherent overall arrangement with a clear attempt to structure the information logically, moving from general observations to specific terminal and airside changes. Paragraphing is utilised to separate distinct areas of the airport, such as terminal amenities and gate configurations. However, the progression between ideas is sometimes mechanical, and cohesive devices are basic or repetitive, often relying heavily on simple connectors like 'and', 'in the current plan', and 'after redevelopment'. Referencing within sentences is occasionally unclear, such as the use of pronouns and informal phrasing like 'when we see on the arrival side'. While logical organisation is evident, these mechanical cohesive techniques prevent the writing from achieving a higher band.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

The vocabulary used is adequate for the task, successfully communicating basic descriptions such as 'amenities', 'redevelopment', and 'concourse'. The writer attempts some less common vocabulary, such as 'redevelopment' and 'transport', but encounters some inaccuracies in word choice, collocation, and word formation, such as 'develped' instead of 'developed', 'it's size' instead of 'its size', and referring to terminal sections simply as 'gates for arrival'. Spelling errors like 'redevelopement' and 'passsengers' are present. While these lexical slips and limitations do not seriously impede overall communication, they restrict the lexical score, as the range remains somewhat restricted and repetitive rather than demonstrating flexible precision.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

The response demonstrates a mix of simple and some complex sentence forms, such as conditional or dependent clauses (e.g., 'when we enter from the departure side...'). There are noticeable errors in grammar, punctuation, and articles throughout the text, including subject-verb agreement issues (e.g., 'New terminal are being constructed', 'size become double'), missing articles (e.g., 'after redevelopment there is shop'), and run-on sentences joined by coordinating conjunctions without proper punctuation. While these errors rarely impede the reader's understanding of the main points, the frequency of basic grammatical slips and faults in complex structures prevents the writing from reaching a higher level of accuracy.
