Student answer (Band 6.0)

The plans below show the site of the soutwest airport now and how it will look after upgradation coming year. The main change will be more departure and arrival terminals and increase in gates also the introduction of sky train. The areas that will not change are security passport control room and passport control customs.

The airport now just have a cafe for a refreshment but after the upgradation the airport will have a facilities of ATM, cafe, shops and car hire services for passengers. Number of gates will also increase from 8 to 18 and passengers will be able to go from one gate to another through sky train rather than walking. There will also be a bag drop service as well where passengers will be able to put their bags for safety and after the upgradation the airport will not be crowded at the terminals because passengers will have access to more than one departure and arrival terminal.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

The response addresses all parts of the task by outlining the main changes and identifying areas that remain the same, meeting the requirements of a solid performance. The student successfully reports key features such as the increase in gates from 8 to 18, the addition of the sky train, and new passenger facilities like shops and car hire. However, some ideas are under-developed or lack full clarity. For example, the statement that terminals will not be crowded because of multiple terminals is a slight extrapolation rather than a direct summary of the visual data. The overview touches upon the main trends, but could be extended further to achieve a higher level of detail regarding spatial rearrangements in the terminal building.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The text maintains a coherent overall arrangement and presents a logical progression of ideas from an introductory summary to specific details about facilities and transport. The student uses basic paragraphing to separate the general changes from the specific features. However, cohesion is sometimes mechanical due to a lack of varied cohesive devices and occasional run-on structures. Referencing is generally clear, but the flow between sentences could be smoothed with better linking phrases rather than relying solely on coordinating conjunctions like 'and' or transition words like 'after the upgradation'. The introductory sentence includes a copied phrase from the prompt, which slightly impacts the natural flow of the opening.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

The vocabulary used is adequate for the task, though the range is somewhat limited and repetitive. The student attempts less common vocabulary with terms like 'upgradation' and 'facilities', but some word choices and collocations are slightly unnatural or inaccurate, such as using 'upgradation' instead of 'upgrading' or 'redevelopment'. There are minor errors in word formation, but these do not impede communication. To reach a higher band, the student should incorporate a wider variety of precise, task-specific vocabulary relating to maps and architectural changes, avoiding repetitive phrasing such as 'after the upgradation' and 'now'.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

The response demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, though complex structures are often limited or contain minor slips. There are several grammatical errors in articles, prepositions, and plurals, such as missing articles ('just have a cafe for a refreshment', 'the airport will have a facilities') and slight prepositional awkwardness. Punctuation is also occasionally lacking, resulting in run-on sentences that require closer reading. Despite these errors in grammar, communication is rarely impeded, and the majority of simpler sentences remain accurate. Improving control over complex clause structures and article usage will elevate this criterion further.
