The plans below show the site of an airport now and how it will look after redevelopment next year.

Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

SOUTHWEST AIRPORT

Student answer (Band 6.0)

Airports are known as established gateways which connects people from different parts of the world for various reasons. Some of the reasons that depict the why people use airport can be personal or for business purposes, while others are obviously for traveling or leisure. Any of these reasons require a whole area built intentionally to serve people.

On the one hand, the former layout shows a quite compressed space for designated areas which can be seen with having only one path for departures and one for arrivals. From the moment a person steps inside departures area, there is an assigned space to check-in. Any person can walk shortly to the right at the end of the hall and they can find a cafe to chill while waiting. Few steps away and already, anyone can reach the passport control and security. After successfully passing through the passport control or security area, all the departing passengers can take the walkway wherein gates one until gate eight can be visibly seen, for them to easily hop on their plane ride. Now, for those passengers from gates one to eigh. They must come to the arrival area. They can just take the right side of the walkway to reach the designated place for passport control and customs. All pasengers who passed through successfully can finally make their way out of the airport.

Since modernization has become a trend that innovates old infrastractures globally, the new development plan for Southwest Airport changed and added a lot of features as well as areas to make the airport more flexible, able to cater every necessary thing a passenger might need. The updated plan on the side of departures has an installed bag drop area, while the check-in and cafe were relocated just around the right upper corner and lower left corner, consecutively. Meanwhile, passport control and security posts are both maintained to its original place, just with an extended area for passengers to shop whatever they need. These shops can be stores that sells souvenirs, fashion items and human essentials like toiletries. Instead of a walkway, it has been upgraded to a sky train. This greatly added more space connected to gates one to eighteen, instead of only gate one to eight. Now for those coming to the arrivals, passport control and customs remain to their place, with another cafe and a newly installed ATM machine. Lastly, there is a specific area to cater passengers in need of car hire to reach their destination after landing.

In conclusion, the newly developed Southwest Airport is much more comfortable and plausible in its functions with its improved space and establishments compared to the former layout which only has common features that can be found in any ordinary airport.
